I heard about that case (not sure if there is an FR thread on it). If we could put aside all this "PC" internationalism stuff, we ought to intercept every cargo ship carrying German cars into the US until they turn this guy over to us so he can be sent to Gitmo.

"A Pentagon spokesman said that "we are aware of the exercise" and that it was similar to U.S. maneuvers carried out "to maintain readiness.""
Worthy of a repost.
I doubt it very much that Russia and the USA would want to annihilate each other. The overriding reason prevents them from doing so. We share too much in common: religion, culture, history, traditions and ethnicity. Why would they want their friend and partner, a member of their own family, if you will, obliterated?
Of course, the detractors would rather see us as enemies rather than friends and partners in our fight against terrorism and Mohammedan. You know, the old divide and conquer.
The plain fact is that the USA and Russia need each other, and so does the rest of the Western world.

"This is truly a sub-nation conflict. The enemy claims no nationality"
Guerilla warfare on the next level up. It still lends itself to being a proxy war when the agenda fits and those are dots some (those with silver streaks in our hair) are seeing here.

Ah, someone who feels about Tenet as I! I am vehemently against this joker! If OBL is under wraps what will that do for the USSR?

The enemy is not nameless or faceless. It is Islam. Militant Islam is pressing the issue. A good start would be declare that Islam is NOT a religion, thus not subject to protection under the 1st amendment. Next, would be to boot Islam out of the U.S. Offer the practitioners time to leave U.S. soil for a country that practices Islam. Purchase any Islamic held properties at fair market value and resell them to non-Islamic interests.
The probability of taking this rational, fair and peaceful approach to getting the scourge of Islam cleared from the U.S. is unlikely. The probable path will be terrorism followed by civil and/or guerilla warfare on our soil.

If the US had captured bin Laden I would imagine they would be worried about unleashing some sleeper cells who had instructions to attack if anything happened to their leader. If the US had captured bin Laden in December I would imagine they would heighten the the alert level for a while - at least through the holidays and eid or haj or whatever it was that just ended. Makes sense that they might have him.

And I will continue to call them USSR

Hi Cal.
Hey, check this out...
"Russia plans big nuclear exercise
Nearly all bombers would take flight to simulate attack
The Associated Press
Updated: 2:23 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2004MOSCOW - Russian nuclear forces are preparing for a massive exercise that would be their largest in more than 20 years, a newspaper reported Friday.
The one-day maneuvers, which were set for next month, would involve test-firing several ballistic missiles and taking almost the entire fleet of Russias strategic bombers into the air in a simulation of a nuclear conflict, according to the business newspaper Kommersant.
Official comments on the exercise have been sketchy. The chief of Russias Strategic Missile Forces, Col.-Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov, was quoted Thursday by the Interfax-Military News Agency as saying the exercise would involve several launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles in various regions of Russia, but he gave no further details.
Kommersant said the maneuvers would be the largest since a 1982 exercise of Soviet nuclear forces, which the West dubbed the seven-hour nuclear war.
Cruise missiles, bombers over Arctic
In the new exercise, Russian Tu-160 bombers are set to test-fire cruise missiles over the northern Atlantic, and other strategic bombers are to conduct flights over Russias Arctic regions and test-fire missiles at a southern range near the Caspian Sea, the newspaper said.
In addition, Russias strategic forces are scheduled to launch military satellites from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and the Plesetsk launch pad in northern Russia, Kommersant reported.
A system warning of an enemy missile attack and a missile defense system protecting Moscow would also be involved in the exercise, which President Vladimir Putin is set to attend, the newspaper said.
Putin has tried to revive Russias military might, eroded by post-Soviet funding shortages, and the ambitious exercises are certain to further bolster his popularity in the run-up to the March 14 presidential election, which he is expected to win in a landslide. Kommersant acerbically dubbed the exercises pre-election maneuvers.
It said Moscow had warned Washington about the exercises, describing them as part of efforts to fend off terror threats"
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4111938/ This bears repeating:
"Moscow had warned Washington about the exercises, describing them as part of efforts to fend off terror threats."
?????????
ah, yeah, right. You fend off stateless international terrorists by launching an all-out full-scale nuclear holocaust against this United States (and perhaps Israel)????
That is the most assinine and ludicrous sentence I have ever read in my entire life, bar none.
Where is my tin foil beanie!!!
