The Democrat nominee wins election to the Presidency by a land slide. Pundits and "experts" in shock.

You are right. I know many hispanics and only a very minority of them have much sympathy for illegals for a variety of reasons.

That's what I would have thought, so why do people always say, when this crops up, that proposals like the ones Bush is putting forward are "pandering to the hispanic vote". Are there any polls to show this?

Illegal immigration. There is as much of a chance of a RAT candidate coming out with a tough policy against Illegal Immigration as a Republican championing Abortion on demand. Will not happen.
OBTW: An immigration bill as imagined by people on this board will not happen.

Good point. The Dept of Labor says that there are 210,000 people employed in stoop labor (picking vegetables ect.) nation wide. I assume not all are illegals. That means that the rest of the 8 to 12 million illegals are engaged in other jobs that Americans compete with them to get. That has the effect of driving down wages and keeping them low. It is as simple as supply and demand. Perhaps you would have been able to pay more for the landscape work if you were earning more money. By that I mean that the effect of 12 million illegals drives down the wages of all of us in an economy that is as interconnected as ours is.

I think that the dem platform will never allow a strong stand of illegal immigration - they have certainly never been for it before, and to do so now doesn't sit well with most the the dem leadership's vision.
You say "The democrats would not abandon a champion who promises to secure our borders." I don't see any dem taking a strong stand like that, in any case.

At first I also thought it was boneheaded. Considering there are 10 - 12 million illegals roaming around the country, we need some strategy to begin getting a handle on the problem. Throw them all out sounds good to me too but I know it's impossible. Next best thing is to devise a policy to identify them and then we are in a better position. Beats talking about it while nothing gets done.

It didn't work in California why would it work in the rest of the USA?It'll work because there's no alternative. On the national level, both parties will pander to the fastest growing voting bloc.

I don't know of any polls on this issue. I think it has to do with peoples attitudes on race. They figure that hispanics are all the same and all think alike. They couldn't be any farther from the truth of the matter if they lived on Mars.

If there are in fact 8-12 million illegals in this country (not all of them from Mexico by the way) how do you one issue people propose to get them out of here? How many police, prosecutors, holding areas, trains, buses, and at what cost would it take to achieve what you want?
I am in agreement with you that something needs to be done but your simplistic rantings and posts without solutions are pointless. It's all been said before.

Have you bothered to read where the Democrats stand on Immigration? You should have before posting this thread.
Cannot figure out why it is posted since there have been many immigration threads and they all say the same crap -- Pres Bush is going to lose his base over this issue -- where are they going?
The Dems want all illegals to become citizens -- what part of that do you not understand? Do you honestly think the base would desert the President over one issue? If you do, you have not been a Republican because we were in the minority for way too long and we remember 9/11 even if the Democrats don't want to go there.
Why don't you check out the facts and see that the vast majority of the President's Base stands with him -- over 90% and quit taking the negative posters on here that wouldn't vote for Bush for any reason -- they use immigration as an excuse to bash the President.

The Democrats support illegal and legal immigration even more than Republicans do. To them, Bush's proposal doesn't go far enough.
If the Democratic nominee advocates ending illegal immigration and sending them back to Mexico or wherever they came from I'll eat my hat.
To: Centennial
You have to be kidding right? The democRATS WANT ILLEGALS to continue to come over here. It's how they get more votes by giving away everything from free schooling, free healthcare, free housing, free food, free, etc,etc,etc...

They don't vote. It is a constant source of worry and irritation to hispanic politicos that only a small minority of hispanics make it to the polls. Look what Cruze Bustamonte tried to do in California. He practically advertised for illegals and all other hispanics to go to the polls. They stayed home.

Easy. Require proof of citizenship/path to citizenship before they are allowed to go on goverment assistance, get any sort of license, and register vehicles.
That is a start. We could also throw in jail the business owners who hire illegals after ONE(1) warning.

If course, I can't spell. Thanks to MSWord - few now know it.

As a life long Republican I hope the Democrat who runs against Bush is too cowardly and poorly advised to use this wedge issue against my party. But I wouldn't bet on it.
Then why did you post this to give the brain dead idiots ideas of grandeur ?

Come on, have you been in the local Shop Rite or Pathmark. Most of the people working there wouldn't even give you the time of day and if you told them they gave you the wrong change, they'd flip you the bird and tell you to F***k Off.
Problem is they could care less if they get fired because they'll make almost the same on unemployment. We have become an "I deserve it because, look at me..... it's me!" society.
The majority of the jobs that you say Americans compete with the 8-12 million illegals are jobs that, trust me Americans really aren't trying all that hard to fill.
If you haven't noticed, we have become quite a spoiled society. That's is our problem, not there's.

Please make it stop Please say no more, ow ow ow. Wake up and smell the coffee. It can happen. You are like most Republicans, you probably have a sense of honor and fairness. Our opponents don't. Where have you been? Have you not paid attention to all the lies and dishonesty the Democrats use daily to get their agenda done? Like it or not the vast majority of people are not as informed as you and most of the people on this blog and are in danger of falling for the seductive promise of secure and fair borders.

How many police, prosecutors, holding areas, trains, buses, and at what cost would it take to achieve what you want? About as many as we have fighting the un-winnable war on drugs, and probably just about as much money as well.
