Nicolae Tesla's Turbine

Posted on 01/13/2004 6:54:34 AM PST by paladinkc

Recently I discovered a group that is working on development of a very old design based on the Tesla turbine, and the claims that they are making that they are getting 40% better efficiency than the modern reciprocating engine, and 20% more than modern turbine engines just floored me. The design of the engine is very very simple in nature and much lighter in comparison to a conventional motor, I would like someone that has more of a technical background like engineering to take a look at all of this and let me know if an engine like this really is possible, because I am thinking about trying to build one for myself, it is an open forum where everyone is sharing their advancements with each other and covers their step by step progress on the engine over the last four years. the website for them is http://www.phoenixnavigation.com/ptbc/toc.htm this takes you to their table of contents where you can look through their previous articles. Warning! there is some liberal bias, but the technology part of it seems to be sound, and that is the primary discussion is the technology development

I got into a Tesla kick a while back and researched the turbines a bit. They seem to work, in theory anyway, but there must be an issue with reliability vs. efficiency, as it translates to operating costs. Otherwise, lawnmowers, cars, etc. would have them in use.

Ever check out the Wankel rotary engine? RX7's have used them for years. The sensation of acceleration is completely different from a piston engine.
