When my kids gave me that old "everybody's doing it" routine, I stopped them short by asking them to name "everybody." They never had an answer to that one until one really serious matter came up.
Daughter asked if she could spend Prom weekend at the beach with her boyfriend and some other couples ("the girls will have one room and the boys another" ... yeah! sure!). When I asked for names, she started rattling off the whole senior class ..... yikes! I talked to one of her teachers and she said that, sadly, it was quite true.
Needless to say, daughter still didn't get our permission .... got to go to the beach for the day. We were meanies .... but I was really shocked at some of the parents who did allow it.

Yes, I recall the prom "beach weekends" as my son was in high school in NC. Jeff didn't get to attend either.

Jeff also had all the pets he wanted as long as he did the work. And he did well . He mostly wanted the Creepy crawly stuff... snakes, lizards, spiders.. but also had gerbils, and the family had cats. One of the snakes liked to sleep with one of the cats. It was strange.

it will be interesting to see how Sarah goes with the alpacas. (sp?).. The rare times I kennel Oliver, I use a young girl. Senior in HS who has been home schooled entire life. She wants to do pet boarding etc as a profession & her dad has built her already extensive kennel facilities on their property. It is along drive, but she has a small operation & really puts her love & soul into each pet visiting.
Better get going.. been on this break MUCH TOO LONG

Yes, if our two teams play, it will be there, because the Panthers have a better record.

Arsenic and Old Lace? I love Cary Grant. He was the best. Too bad men aren't like that in real life - I think he was an alien species sent to earth to drive earth women crazy.
Not that earth men aren't wonderful, too. ;^)

Granny ~~~ see #133. Didn't you post something in the last day or so saying that choosing whether or not to back someone kind of put him in a bind? Wonder what this choice means ..... both to him and to the race in general.

Wonder what this choice means ..... both to him and to the race in general. That is what I was wondering .. I would have thought Harkin would support Clark since he's a Clinton pick

I wonder if that had anything to do with my husband's difficulties this AM. He usually drops Nick off at high school around 7 am and drives in to the new Patent Office building near the newish federal courthouse in Alexandria.
Instead, after he dropped Nick off he came back in and went back to bed for a couple of hours, saying the traffic was the worst he'd ever seen. He thought it was due to the roads being covered with ice.

Here's what Iowa Granny posted earlier, quoted from a columnist:
There is much buzz about whether Senator Tom Harkin will endorse Dean or not. Harkin, who has the wettest index finger in Iowa politics, can sense Dean's Big Mo and wants to be part of it. The senator also likes Dean's fire on the stump. But, he also likes Gephardt's long history of support for progressive causes. Gephardt's hard-scrabble Midwestern upbringing is also more like Harkin's own childhood than Dean's privileged East Coast background.
However, this is business, and Harkin, like others, worries Gephardt's time has passed. But Harkin may want to seek re-election in 2008. If he does, he'll need a lot of the financial support from the labor unions that are now backing Gephardt. He'll also need the activists and volunteers who are helping other candidates. (As I said, this is business.)
With only days left in the campaign, Harkin would also look like a Tommy-come-lately to the Dean endorsement parties, and Dean has already built an impressive organization and following among Iowans without any help from the senator. A Harkin endorsement might persuade undecided Democrats that the doctor is the way to go, but there's little time left for Harkin to do the fly-arounds and stump work needed to effectively drive home that argument.

thanks for dragging in the reprint of my column post. I had men for dinner today (4) and wasn't listening to FNC. So I've missed the announcement.
I am FLOORED with Harkin's announcement. He is very closely associated with the Unions in Iowa,, the same Unions who have endorsed Dick Gephardt.
It would have made far more sense to me for Harkin to remain neutral. Now it will be really interesting to see what the other 500 lb. gorilla in Iowa's Democrat Circle will do. Governor Tom Vilsack (commonly known as VIL-TAX), who is currently chair of the Democrat Governor's Assn, has not endorsed. It will be interesting to see if he does. I don't think he will. His name is being mentioned as a possible VP Candidate. He needs to keep as many options open as possible.
