Gretchen! I can NOT believe I said nearly this exact thing this morning! I haven't even seen the third movie yet (schedules have not worked out), but my husband and I were talking about this.

Eomer came across as the most self-assured, dutiful, and MANLY of the male characters. He knew what was right and continued to DO what was right, even after his banishment in TTT. He was very regal. None of the indecision or touchy-feely turmoil that seems to be part of all the other human male characters.

Just wanted you to know that you are in no way alone in thinking this. Thanks for voicing that very astute observation :-)

Oh yeah, and thanks for posting the pic!

You made my day! Eomer = MANLY = BINGO!

I wonder if it will ever occur to PJ that the REAL Aragorn was right there in NZ all the time ... sigh.

I think the real-life Eomer has quite a good career ahead of him. ;-)

Hi GretchenEE:

Just catching up on some old Hobbit Hole threads. Regarding Eomer as Aragorn; Aragorn was supposed to be, well, less than good looking. (Look fouler and feel fairer, to paraphrase Frodo) Eomer, on the other hand, is GORGEOUS *sigh*. He's my favorite heartthrob in the movie - replacing Legolas and Faramir - close seconds. No, Eomer is too good-looking, and a fit man to take the place of Theoden as king of Rohan - which I assume he did. From the beginning, I was never much interested in Aragorn. I liked the Aragorn in the book, but the Viggo Mortensen version did nothing for me!

"PJ should have cast the man who played Eomer as Aragorn."

No way! Eomer was okay, but Viggo (his personal politics notwithstanding) WAS Aragorn. Also, he is older, but still has a face that made it easy to show him as being either older or younger as the scene called for.

The more I see of Viggo's Aragorn, the less I can stomach him. He's way toooo wussy and whispery and reluctant. I was holding out for this to change in the RotK, and when he pulled that reluctant step up to the throne with a shake of his head, I about gagged. NO WAY was it credible to me.

I'm on my third listen to the BBC tapes of LotR with Ian Holm as Frodo and even the man they cast as Aragorn is awful -- too arrogant! I like all the others in the BBC cast (excepting the 80-year-old sounding Arwen). So I guess the Numenoreans really, really are a lost line. ;-)

Karl Urban (Eomer) in my opinion is far and away more manly and convincingly kingly. Viggo played the part in a wussy, too-reluctant way to make me believe in him, swordsmanship notwithstanding.
