Available now in certain areas, providers are offering UNLIMITED long distance as a part of basic service. And it is cheap. SBC and Sprint both have plans for less than fifty bucks a month.

I got a calling card from my local convienent store for $20.00. Made about 15 calls averaging 15 minutes each over a six month period. Still had some credit left. Best deal I have ever found and you avoid monthly bills and postage. It's what all the illegal aliens are using.

Shop, switch, and shop again. My local co. (SBC) has some good plans. I pay $2/month, get 60 minutes of free long distance and pay 7 cents/minute on toll calls and 7 cents for any long distance minute over 60. After I switched to this plan ATT harrassed me to no end and offered some good deals, but could never beat it.

I use Sam's Club ATT long distance cards for the most part myself, cheap rates, and I know ahead of time how much I'm spending.

If you're only making a few calls a month, don't bother with any long distance plan. But from your post, it seems like your real problem isn't state to state calls but local toll calls and in-state calls. Look for a program that gives you unlimited calling in-state, and compare how much you pay now vs. how much you would pay with in-state calls free.

I've been using SBC since they have a flat rate of $20.00 that covers toll and all long distance calls. It's cheaper than buying the so-called metro line and it cut down on my long distance expense by quite a bit.

If you're keeping your landline phone and don't want a long distance plan, get a prepaid phone card. Or if you plan on making more than a few calls, look for a flat rate plan. Through SBC, I'm able to get unlimited long distance for $20/month.

If you have a broadband connection, you might consider ditching landline phone service and switching to Vonage, which provides your local phone service through a cable/DSL modem. The quality is pretty close to landline, and the package plans are pretty cheap. Cell service is another option, but if you make a lot of calls during the day, the plans can be quite expensive. Also, it just doesn't have the quality of landline service.

Ditto on the advice about the AT&T card through Sam's Club. You can also get an MCI phone card at Costco that is priced at 2.9 cents/minute. There are no hidden charges on either of these cards. The only time you pay anything in addition to the stated cents/minute is when you use a pay phone. We use these cards except on the weekend, when we get unlimited minutes on the cell phone.
