One thing that strikes me about this type viggo, jonalvy44 and their ilk is that I know what my son-in-law would say if I started ranting to him about these guys. Why do I know, because I've done it and Tom has responded. Okay, so why does Tom's opinion matter to me? Because he's the guy over in Baghdad right now with mortar fire dropping into his living space and he is just as conservative as any of us FReepers.
And his comment to my rants in the past has been, "But, Kimberly, we are fighting, spilling blood and dying so these guys can think and say what they want."
*shaking head*
Sad, but true. And no matter how foolish Viggo's and jonalvy44's ideas, this is the country where they can express 'em. And where we can bash 'em for bein' so stupid.

jonalvy44, I recd. this "ping" from my fellow LOTR fans and friends rather late. Would you like to know "why?"
I have a liberal cousin who I have been trying to bring over to our side for years. This week I had a break through with her. She called and wanted to get together so that we might watch the two LOTR rings films already on video. It seems what she has heard about the films had reached her, was speaking to her heart. Therefore, I spent a good part of the day and evening arranging for this visit.
Lord Of The Rings is a parable. The work contains such good values as wisdom, honor, loyalty, courage, and sacrifice. These are the principles this nation was built on, and continues to keep it together.
So if I follow your "boycott" advise, should I cancel my time with my cousin, because Viggo has some goofy ideas and cannot keep his mouth shut? Should I dismiss this window of opportunity when the film's values are speaking into her life?
Do I also not only ignore, but insult the pro American stands of Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, and John Rheys Davis? I think not.
Lord Of The Rings has spoken and encouraged many Americans esp. after 9/11. The film has brought back in to the light once again, time-honored morals that are very much needed in this hour.
If you pursue this boycott, you could cause further division in our ranks at a time when we need every conservative soldier united. God only knows what this country could be facing in the next elections.
I ask you to reconsider your attack on this movie. This film does not deserve it. Bashing your fellow conservatives is not the answer either. Save your energy for some of the more worthy Hollywood trash like a Michael Moore doc. God helps us.

That was the old Destructor. Prior to learning about the good works of the Hobbit Hole folks on behalf of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. I had the wrong idea about all of you "Rings" fans.
Now, I find Hobbits to be good company!
To: Destructor; ksen
That was the old Destructor. See ksen? Look what he can do.
However, I fear that all hope is lost for the poster of this thread.

It's probably worth noting that Tolkien, if anything, politically seems to have been a Whig, with the Shire, with almost no government, being very reminiscent of the classically liberal ideals which formed the basis for the ideals on which our country was founded. All of which is over the head of Viggo, and surprisingly, Jonalvy44. Tolkien's disapproval of socialism is in print, to the best of my knowledge.
Excellent, yes. I've argued before that I believe Tolkien would have been a Reagan/Thatcher conservative if he had lived long enough. and the Viggo comments probably have him stirring in his grave, as we are. He was a good man, who knew truth when he crossed it.

The way I see it is that I WANT to go give these people my money...that gives me a legitimate reason to tell them to go to hell when they forget their chosen place in this world..in the vein of "I paid money to see them ACT, not pontificate" Its a hard lesson the Dixie Chicks have yet to learn.
Nothing says idiot like an unearned political pulpit.

The English (and therefore our) tradition of individual freedom, I believe, has its roots in British Anglo Saxon culture, which is also the culture for which Tolkien devised the mythology of the LOTR. The Shire is a pretty good example of a free society in the classically liberal sense, and I think it not a coincidence, in spite of the fact that I don't really see Tolkien as a political animal, as some of us are.
Yeah, Viggo doesn't really get it, even with it right in front of his face. No perspective, I guess. At least he does a great Aragorn, anyway.
As for Monaghan, I remember that there were some hobbits who collaborated with the enemy, though perhaps not Brandybucks ;-)
