Akron, Ohio -- King James has his palace.
LeBron James, the NBA's No. 1 draft pick, has bought a 12,611-square foot home with 11 bedrooms and eight full baths for $2.1 million. The home is on 5 1/2 acres in an Akron suburb, about 25 miles from Cleveland.
The 18-year-old rookie for the Cleveland Cavaliers is renovating the house. He said he is living in three apartments in downtown Cleveland until the construction is completed.
According to tax records, the two-story colonial-style house was purchased Oct. 28. It was built in 1977 and a $2 million addition was built in 1999. The house has a full basement and three fireplaces. Real estate taxes on the property in 2002 were about $23,000.
James has a $13 million contract with the Cavaliers and a $90 million endorsement deal with Nike.

I hope LeBron used a little bit of that money to buy a LOT of insurance. All those contracts and endorsement deals aren't gonna mean jack if he finds one of his legs Joe Theismanned out on the court some night.

For that kind of dough I'd want a house a bit farther off the road.

Cool house. Well I'm off to see Lebron and the Cavaliers beat the Atlanta Hawks.
Later.

The crazy thing is that he'll probably end up with another team in three or four years. Then you have a huge house in Cleveland while you're playing in Los Angeles or New York, and it's just sitting there vacant. 18 year old super athletes aren't known for their foresight. But hey it's his money to spend the way he wants.

Still, I'd rather be a rock star.

I just hope the kid keeps his head into Basketball and not the evils that befall so many!
