Interestingly, the mound is believed by some geologists to lie within a greatly eroded prehistoric meteor crater. The crater, if that is what it is, was formed as long ago as 320 million years, ages before humans appeared, and the Indians' erection of the mound in it must have been purely coincidental. Or was it? A "Great Old Ones" ping...

I'm curious to know why the archaeology news of the day, 12-2-2003, is relegated to 'chat' while tabloid ( Sex On The Kitchen Table) news is allowed to stay in the news section?Maybe if we say it's a giant sperm we can get this back in 'news'???

I was thinking along the lines of 200' tall octopus-faced guys from cities built with non-Euclidean geometry...

Have you heard anything about any big human skulls with double rows of teeth found in this area? (I am serious)

How large is large? Too bad they didn't make more actual measurements. There are a large number of large skeletons in museums in South America, some skeletons running 7 to 8 feet tall. Stories exist of skeletons 12 feet tall and more, and skulls twice the size on modern men, but those are just stories.

There are all kinds of stories in the county records around the Ohio area of farmers unearthing giant human skeletons. The stories seem to be to numerous for something not to be going on.

I was quite interested in the mound builders while in school, and I never heard anything of big skeletons or skulls. In fact, all of the artifacts that I ever saw were for normal sized indians (in other words, on the smallish size).

this is an ancient mound and when white men came to the area, they asked the local Indians about it and all they could say was that it was there for generations but they said they did not know what Indians had built it or any of the other numerous mounds in the area. There are alot of mounds still standing in Ohio...although many of them were leveled in my area by the local Indians before they were forced to move out west. I think Thomas Jefferson even did some digging there.

I remember reading about a group of places in the US where giants are buried but I don't recall if they are buried at that site. I read that these giants had huge skulls with double rows of teeth and that a grown man could easily place one of the sculls over his head...but you couldn't pay me to do it! I will try to find a site that Dixielander told me about last summer. I worked with an Archaeologist from Ohio that spent alot working in that area and he never mentioned anything strange.

This is follow-up to my post no. 10: if Serpent Mound is located within an ancient meteor crater, the crater isn't obvious on contour maps of the area.

I wonder how it was discovered then?
If the meteor was composed of iron its remains might cause a magnetic anomaly. Some posters here have mentioned magnetic disturbances have been reported in the area of Serpent Mound.
If it was a nonferrous meteor, the impact would still leave clues resulting from the intense forces against the materials at Earth's surface -- shattered stone, for example. The discovery of "shatter cones" in rock at a suspected meteor crater is usually taken as conclusive evidence of a meteor impact.
