Oh Dave, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My heartfelt prayers are with you and your wife, and the rest of your family. I do believe that your father was very grateful for your efforts to save his life. Ten years ago, I lost my father suddenly while I was 3,000 miles away, having spoken to him on the phone three days before. God bless you for seeing the chance God gave you, to see him as he lived his life.
Of course, the pain is so real and so immediate - I know there's little I could say to mitigate that. It's only a Band-Aid. But do know that you're among friends who understand everything that surrounds the love of family. You are not alone, and you do not pray alone.
God bless you all.

1st - thanks for the ping, kayak
2nd - I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, dd5339.
I lost my Dad last year, and it was an awful experience. I, like you, felt a sense of calm after the initial shock. I think this was because I knew he was a good and decent man of honor - a WWII Vet, a kind father, and a great provider. His sense of humor made him very well liked by everyone--right down to the grocery store clerk that said she'd never met a man so dear. In other words I knew he was going to a better place. He was just to wonderful not to.
I think we have to remember that it is the most difficult for us, the ones left here to remain and experience the loss of not being able to be near these beloved people again. They, on the other hand, are sitting there asking God all the things they made passing comments on during their lives. They get to be held in our Father's arms and be completely surrounded by God's love and the light of truth and wisdom and all things that are good.
I celebrate your Dad. I toast to his place right next to our Father. I wish him well, and you the comfort of remembering he is in the BEST of all places.
Now, go out and do random acts of kindness. Type up little notes that say, "This act of kindness was brought to you by _____, my Father, a man of great dignity and love of life." Maybe work it around something that reminds you of your Dad, in the theme.
Big hugs, fellow Freeper...the pain of loss does get better, but will never leave you completely. Go out and honor your Father, now. It will help you, too.

"At first I was asking God why he was throwing these curve balls at me but I realized that it was a gift that he has given me. The chance to see him one last time as I knew him. Whole, hearty and full of life." My prayers go forth for you and your wife, that you might be comforted and surrounded by His love.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful testament to the power of faith and believing, and for recognizing God gave you that last wonderful memory of your father.
When I was 27, my parents put me on a plane in 1961 with my two little boys to go to Rapid City, South Dakota to join my husband. He was assigned to Ellsworth AFB, the SAC base that was home to the B-52's. That year brought a daughter, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and on the heels of those events orders to go to Fairbanks, Alaska for 3 1/2 years.
I thus did not have a chance to return to Florida to visit, and my mother a year later was stricken with an aneurysm. She went to heaven while I was perched atop the continent, never able to see her again and say goodbye.
You were blessed to have the chance to be with your father one more time, gathering to give thanks...

Team Silverback will go boldly to the throne of the universe to ask for all the grace you need. May you recieve His comfort. We send you Isaiah 61:3.

Christ will...
comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion-
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.
