Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Posted on 11/26/2003 5:11:30 AM PST by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

osculate \ohs*cue*late\, verb:
osculated, osculates, osculating; transitive, intransitive verb
osculation; noun
deosculate, deosculation; (fondly)
exosculate, exosculation; (vigorously)

1. To kiss..
2. Mathematics: To have three or more points coincident with.
3. To come together; contact.

A Plain Old Kiss
Some people need a peck or two;
For others a simple smooch will do;
Too many, a graze will stimulate;
A few may want to osculate.
And then, there are those who need a smack,
For flowery words they have a knack.
But all I want from you is bliss,
Which you can give me with a plain, old kiss!
- Arr. Ara John Movsesian

Etymology [Latin scul r , scul t-, from sculum, kiss, diminutive of s, mouth. See s- in Indo-European Roots.]

to conclude:

The popular grammarian Edwin Newman chided a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court for writing "to say more would belabor the obvious," stating: "To belabor the obvious is to hit it, which hardly seems like judicial conduct." Edwin Newman, Foreword to Morton S. Freeman, A Treasury for Word Lovers viii (1983).
In fact, though, the figurative sense of "belabor" so vastly predominates over the literal one that it should be accepted as standard -- e.g.: o "Throughout the summer of 1954, broadcasters and editors belabored the story." James J. Kilpatrick, "Ghost of Dr. Sam Will Walk with O.J. Out the Door," State J.-Register (Springfield, Ill.), 11 Oct. 1994, at 4.

For example, apparently it's too much trouble for the Whyisa to labour her way oot of the sack. And everyone else probably won't show because they're labouring at stuffing their faces with you-know-what (I'M REFERRING TO TURKEY, not that cheap physical stuff you're thinking of, Miss Xs!), the lucky dogs!

Geez, xs, I can understand your inordinate desire to castrate your dogs every time you take a breath, but surgerizing his belly button is just too much!

Who does he think he is?

Jesse is the High Priest of the Holy Cathedral of the Greased Palm.
They don't "pass the plate" at the Cathedral... Jesse comes around personally and sucks the cash right out of your wallet.

It wouldn't help, to be a member of PETA you must already be castrated.

Happy Thanksgiving! Our plans got changed at the last minute, and we made reservations at a favorite restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner-I will smoke my turkey Saturday, instead.

Tomorrow, we are going to a friend's ranch with the kids for a get-together and to cut down the dead cedar tree that will become the mantel for our living room fireplace.

Robert, his brother and sister-in-law, who are our near neighbors, joined us for dinner last evening and we had a great time-we shut the restaurant down. Robert's brother took some pictures, but I don't know how soon they will be available. We might see them on our way home from dinner, and if so, I will ask.

Jesse Jackass is delusional and a huge fraud. I don't understand why the powers that be in his church don't throw him out.
