Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 26, 2003

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

osculate \ohs*cue*late\, verb:
osculated, osculates, osculating; transitive, intransitive verb
osculation; noun
deosculate, deosculation; (fondly)
exosculate, exosculation; (vigorously)

1. To kiss..
2. Mathematics: To have three or more points coincident with.
3. To come together; contact.

A Plain Old Kiss
Some people need a peck or two;
For others a simple smooch will do;
Too many, a graze will stimulate;
A few may want to osculate.
And then, there are those who need a smack,
For flowery words they have a knack.
But all I want from you is bliss,
Which you can give me with a plain, old kiss!
- Arr. Ara John Movsesian

Etymology [Latin scul r , scul t-, from sculum, kiss, diminutive of s, mouth. See s- in Indo-European Roots.]

Are you kidding me? That's a career. Like any other career, your commitment to it usually determines your success, and your successes are more visible than most. Yep.

You're at least 2 days older than me, not younger. And we're both younger than MJ. ;) This celebrating 5 days early is aging me rapidly!

It's not easy being the social secretary for this place, is it? You have to keep track of all of us! The baking is finally done and I am off to read a bit. Have a good night!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!

It's barely light out, but my dad is already out and rolling, to pick me up. I'm not fully awake yet (which explains why I have to keep retyping everything, to get rid of the typos), but I just wanted to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday! :)

OK, WHYISA, IT'S THANKSBLOODYGIVING, AND ABOOT TIME YOU DRAGGED YOUR SORRY CARCASS OUT OF THE SACK!

It's time to start preparing the turkey, so as a special gift just for you:

How to cook a turkey:

A. Get stuffed.
B. Throw yourself in the oven.

You're welcome!

bc i just got this in my Garner's usage tip of the day, and you are here, i will share this little nugget with you, arghy:

belabor; labor, v.t.
Modern dictionaries suggest that these two words are interchangeable. But "belabor" (= to attack physically) is not traditionally used figuratively in phrases such as "to belabor an argument," the preferred expression being "to labor an argument" -- e.g.: "I need not labor the point that the four elements of the positivist creed just outlined are interdependent." Lon L. Fuller, The Morality of Law 193 (rev. ed. 1969).
