New Vespa Motor Scooter Introduced

Tuesday November 18, 1:30 pm ET

The Granturismo Is The Fastest, Most Powerful Vespa Model Ever Developed

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time since 1996, Piaggio USA Inc., manufacturer of the world-famous Vespa® motor scooter, has introduced a new model to the U.S. market. The Vespa Granturismo, as its name implies, is a touring vehicle by design. The Granturismo is the biggest, fastest, most powerful and technologically advanced Vespa that Piaggio has produced, offering comfort and performance on even the longest of rides. With a large steel body and 200cc engine, the Vespa Granturismo is the perfect mix of classic Vespa style and state-of-the-art technology.

"The U.S. scooter market has grown tremendously in the last couple of years due in part to the American consumer's realization that scooters are a stylish, yet economical mode of transportation for everything from navigating city streets to shopping in suburbia," said Costantino Sambuy, President and CEO of Piaggio USA, Inc.

In addition to its 200cc engine, this is the first Vespa to have a four-stroke, four-valve, liquid-cooled engine, as well as 12-inch wheels, a two-disc brake system and a 20 hp maximum power output. This allows for exceptional agility and ease-of-use, especially in city riding, and an engine configuration that offers top performance, brilliant acceleration and a maximum speed of over 70 mph. The Granturismo exceeds CARB (California Air Resources Board) standards, America's most stringent regulations regarding noise and exhaust emissions.

"In additional to the Granturismo's driving performance, its classic Vespa design is familiar and appealing to the American consumer," said Mr. Sambuy. "One look and you can tell it's a Vespa. The Granturismo is meant to satisfy the most advanced and demanding standards of performance and comfort; while simultaneously satisfying the 'It has to be a Vespa' need of those who want something that reflects a specific personality and lifestyle, rather than just a scooter."

Available at authorized Vespa boutiques throughout the U.S., the Granturismo is available in three fashionable colors that will emphasize each owner's sense of style: Steel Gray, Black, and Vintage Green. The suggested retail price of the Granturismo is $4899. For more information on the Granturismo and its availability visit www.vespausa.com.

Manufactured by Piaggio in Tuscany, Italy, the first Vespa was designed in 1946 by Enrico Piaggio as a solution to transportation following the destruction of World War II. Combining the best elements of aeronautics, automobiles and motorcycles, it instantly became an icon of design and economy. In 2000, after a 15-year hiatus, the fabled Italian scooter returned to the United States to entice new generations with its efficient, entertaining and still nostalgic nature.

Piaggio USA is an active member of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and encourages riders to always wear a helmet, appropriate eyewear and proper apparel. The company suggests that all scooter owners/operators attend a motorcycle/scooter rider-training course to learn how to safely and skillfully operate a Vespa and recommends the MSF RiderCourse® (800/446-9227) as the best introduction to riding. OK, OK, how about No Sex for a week, then, instead of No Beer for 3 days?

Me?? I was talking about the Whyisa having to abstain! She'd have my permission to freepmail me once an hour to bitch about it, but I wouldn't respond, and she'd end up a better person for the experience. About time, too.

I was lucky to grow up in a place where the Chief of Police would let you ride a scooter around town in grade school if you got good grades and behaved yourself. I rode a Vespa and a Cushman Eagle but loved the Vespa.

That is an excellent idea! Your devotion to fairness is only exceeded by your willingness to accept annoyance!

Hey now, I didn't do anything that warrants that kind of cruel and unusual punishment.....Arghy you know me - I can't go 3 days, much less a week without sex....I have needs........ even the beer punishment is horrible!

'WAY to late, kiddo! Our eminently fair-minded conservative referee has already awarded the match to me, so your usual I'll-just-throw-my-absurd-body-at-the-ref-to-win tactic is kaput.
