According to Suetonis, he actually uttered or rather sobbed these words several times in the hours before he finally got up the nerve to take his own life, with the rebeling legions closing in, though they were not his last words. Nero , according to the same source, was the first name of all Claudian males, from an Etruscan word meaning "strong and active".
