Toby Keith Pulls Freeper's Punch at Dixie Chicks
Entertainment Weekly (login required) ^ | October 31, 2003 | Chris Willman

Toby Keith, in an interview published in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, speaking of his public feuding with the we're-not-country-anymore group the Dixie Chicks, says the following:

But it's his feud with ''miserable person'' Maines that's earned Keith the most attention lately. ''She said my song makes country music look ignorant and you've gotta have more tact and be responsible,'' says Keith. ''They had a song called 'Earl Must Die' or something ['Goodbye Earl']. How hypocritical is that? How can you come off of a song with the message that if your husband abuses you, you're supposed to kill him and stick him in the trunk, or whatever -- I never heard it, but people told me about it -- and then call me ignorant for saying, 'Hey, you flew these planes into these buildings. We're angry about it, and we're gonna come get you'?''

Despite the F.U.T.K.-wear, Keith has no intention of lighting up Maines' world anymore. Last summer, his crew ''put up on our big screen an Internet picture somebody [concocted] of her and Saddam. The crowd went nuts. It was funny for a few nights, and then it started eating at me. I thought, You know what? I don't have that mean of a heart, to be able to kick somebody in the crotch like that. Just because she's young and spouted off, that's a little hardcore. So I put an end to it.''

Toby Keith -- the let-bygones-be-bygones, not-so-angry American? Well, maybe. But also, he adds, ''if I'm gonna do anything, it's gotta be funnier than that.'' In other words: Watch your a--, Natalie.

I bought the Greatest Hits CD yesterday but couldn't find the Unleashed one -- it was sold out, I suppose. I'm glad my car windows are tinted so I can sing along. Loudly. ;-)

Thanks for that link, KC. Just what I needed!

That's a shame. As I said, I admire him as a musician although he is an unindicted plagiarist.

Genesis is one of the four most pretentious bands ever. (The other three are Yes, ELP and Pink Floyd.)

. . . she said, donning flame-retardant leathers and looking out for angry Roger Waters fans

Oh, come on! I agree with you about ELP and Yes, but what about the Moody Blues? Procol Harum? King Crimson? And the new heroes of "You don't get it because you're not smart enough" art-rock, Radiohead?

Maybe Genesis was pretentious back in the Peter Gabriel-Steve Hackett days, but there are few LPs less pretentious than Invisible Touch.

You're right! King Crimson was also amazingly pretentious - and Radiohead is just plain intellectually preachy. Blech.

A 'happy bump' for this thread.

I found and bought Unleashed yesterday. Must have played "Angry American" 7 or 8 times by the time I got home with it 20 minutes later. :-)

Thanks for the help.

LOL, I think my wife has about worn them out. She knows that if I get ahold of that CD while we are in my Jimmy, that her ears are going to be blasted.

I think that women see his stuff one of two ways. Some, like one of the country music preformers said before the Manes-"Bush comment, feel that: "Toby has issues with women..." due to his lyrics. Others, perhaps more confident in themselves, see him as an honest "real man" and like his gusto, even if he isn't their particular brand of male star in appearance. Remember, their are still two buying days before the new one comes our...you might catch up with us.

Yea! When rather told Toby peter was his friend, Toby told him he wasn't his! I loved the part when he cracked on Jennings for being from Canada!

Me and Keith have a lot in common - well, maybe one thing - we played our guitars too loud as teenagers.

Get ready. Rather is a big fan/friend of the Vichy Chicks. Watch for Keith to drop a bombshell-- Keith has gone wobbly on Iraq, I suspect that will come out in the interview and it will be milked by the commies at SeeBS for all it's worth.

LONG BLACK TRAIN by Josh Turner. I agree. I heard it in the car. Did't recognize the song or the singer, but realized it was BIG.

Some, like one of the country music preformers said before the Manes-"Bush comment, feel that: "Toby has issues with women..." due to his lyrics.

I can see where some women would think that. In fact, the other day I think I heard him say the word "rescue" when singing about a girl or a relationship and that was my immediate reaction. (That word always gets my attention when someone says it in the context of a relationship because of the possible meaning behind it.)

But you know what? I started thinking that would be a huge underestimation of his songwriting skills and intuitive talent. This guy seems to know who he is and what his potential is. Combine that with his sense of knowing what will sell and you get a bunch of songs that become best-sellers because people can relate to them.

Here's a perfect example that caught my eye yesterday: Rolling Stone review

Some airhead is talking about sending her ex-boyfriend a copy of Toby's "How do you like me now?" song:

TobyKeithFan1 writes:

I love this song! It totally describes my relationship with my ex-boyfriend. We're friends, but not good friends, and I sent him a tape with this song on it right after we broke up. I had gotten a total makeover and started hanging out with all of the really popular people; which I didn't do before, hence the dumping. Now whenever I think about him, I just play this song. I love this song! :-) I can't get enough of it!

Toby Keith doesn't have "issues with women." Toby Keith knows what will sell because other people "have issues." :-)

I know, I know... Shutup Nita and just enjoy the music. LOL!

LOL! I'll bet you've never played a country song in your entire lifetime. Somehow I can't picture The Pardekmeister jammin' to Lovesick Blues!

Now leave me alone. CMT just said he's coming on to sing 3 of his hit songs. Shhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Yes, we noticed that but I believe it is one we saw the first time it aired.

Sweetie is in serious Bernina-mode on unfinished quilt projects that she has let lag all year. She even sent me out to buy power tools at the Sear's Craftman sale without her supervision, to give you a measure of how driven she is on this catch-up. We rebuilt and painted an old table of hers six weeks ago that her machine sits on and she had yet to spend any time at it until today.

Watch the CMT for a while looking for some of his old videos when he was a skinny kid, you'll get a real kick.

Keith made Rather look like Ned in the first reader in
that interview. Not intentionally. He was a polite guy,
but the usual big shot interviewer stance didn't faze
Toby in the least. They don't know how to deal with
anyone who's not the usual Hollywood phony type.
