When I came home from work this afternoon a small package was waiting for me... Apple's newest operating system: Macintosh OS-X Panther.
The system comes on three disks plus another disk of Developer Tools. The installation actually only uses two of the CDs and in fact the second only carries the "i" applicatin software and the extra language files. Updating my OSX .2.8 installation on my 1.6Mhz G5 took only 22 minutes... plus another 15 or so for the software and extra languages. Although I prudently backed up my critical files, the installation went smoothly and my files were left untouched and my preferences were retained with no problem. First impression is that everything is a tad quicker. Appleworks 6.0 opens about twice as fast as previously as does Microsoft Office for Macintosh. Safari's (Macs browser) opperation is noticeably faster.
One glitch I have discovered is that Marine Aquarium 2.0 Screen blanker's column of bubbles displays as a white funnel... no bubbles. Turning it off brings back the water background. But the bubbles were nice. I use the Aquarium animation as my desktop background and, without bubbles, it still works nicely. I also discovered that I did need to reinstall my serial number for Marine Aquarium 2.0 for some reason.
So far all other passwords and serial numbers are present and accounted for.
One thing missing... the Clock application. I liked having a floating day/date clock on my desktop that you could adjust the transparency of... not found on my Harddrive now. Rats.
Classic (OS 9.2.2) boots much faster and works as expected.
Expose works as advertised. A single key stroke "thumbnails" every open application window on the screen. Clicking on any of them brings that application to the front as the active window. It does not bring up "hidden" applications however. Moving the mouse over a thumbnail describes what it is. I'll have to explore this more.
Better download a patch.

Good question... for some reason Apple started code naming their new releases after big cats... OS X.2 was "Jaguar" and the box and CD featured a Jaguar skin printed X... Panther has a black box and black CDs.

Okay, now we really hate you.
It's what Microsoft was lamely trying to make Windows XP look like.
I've seen some Linux screenshots and was actually impressed, especially by the 'image editor' named, oddly, GIMP
OS X is not Linux. It is an advanced user interface sitting on top of BSD Unix. You may be able to recompile GIMP for it though, I'm not sure.
