Why 'Panther'? Good question... for some reason Apple started code naming their new releases after big cats... OS X.2 was "Jaguar" and the box and CD featured a Jaguar skin printed X... Panther has a black box and black CDs.

does it look substantially different from Windows? I've seen some Linux screenshots and was actually impressed, especially by the 'image editor' named, oddly, GIMP
If I ever go Linux, I'll definitely want that.
