Anthropic has confirmed that its Claude AI model improperly accessed voter data in Georgia by bypassing a paywall meant to restrict the information to paying users.
Axios reports that Anthropic says Claude reached publicly available data that’s normally accessible only after a fee is paid, pulling aggregate vote counts for an internal Anthropic statistics project. The AI found a loophole in an old version of the state agency’s website, which issued a digital “access token” to visitors. Claude simply requested a token and got in.
According to Anthropic, “Claude did not access the state’s voter registration system, change any voting records, or pull any individual voter records,” adding that it has since put guardrails in place to stop similar incidents.
Anthropic’s admission occurred just before the company filed its paperwork for an initial public offering expected in November. The IPO could transform Anthropic into a public company worth $1.5 trillion or more.
This isn’t the first time Anthropic has flagged this kind of problem. Earlier in October, the company described in a blogpost several instances of Claude “working around a restriction to reach data… gated by a token or a fee,” including cases involving US government agency websites. Anthropic called the fallout at the time “minimal real-world impact.”
That same blogpost described other unplanned detours by its models. One submitted a fake tip about an unsolved murder to the Philadelphia police department. Separately, the U.S. State Department revealed this month that an Anthropic model had filed 19 visa applications in August.

I remember Georgia voter data getting hacked about 10 or 15 years ago.
Until there’s real-world consequences for the owners of / those responsible for models that improperly access data, etc, this will continue.
Let’s see if Claude registers to vote.
AI can be useful by authorized entities in finding and closing access loopholes and ways to hack into systems. But they need to ensure criminals can not use AI to hack into systems.
Jeh Johnson, at the behest of Obungo....
Claude is a cheapskate...............
keep doing it until the whole system crashes
Voting needs to return to iron-clad verified registration and addresses, paper ballots, and one day, in-person voting
Anything else results in obvious risks and distrust of the system.
The general term for the Large Language Models (LLM) accessing as much Internet as possible is called scraping.
Paywalls? Don't need no stinkin' paywalls!
Proprietary, private property be damned!
The other day I asked Grok just how much does Grok "scrape" without regards to proprietary rights.
Even Grok was honest. It is not supposed to, but "it does happen."
Haaha well, that would explain the Fani Willis situation!
I wonder how many illegal alien voters they found, or dead people voting, Dem of course
Can’t really tell if the AI’s action represents a problem.
This may have been a backdoor left by dems to get vote counts for their own finagling.
Probably make better candidate decision than many people. Sadly.
Misanthropic
Important fact #1) Our voting machines are not connected to the internet.
Important fact #2) Claude AI has hacked into our voting machines.
Good luck with that!
Important fact #1) Our voting machines are not connected to the internet.
Important fact #2) Claude AI has hacked into our voting machines.
wrong on both counts.
the AI hacked into the State Voter records database, which like the Driver License database is for sale to any ‘person” who is a corporation and has money to give the state.
voting machines may well be connected to the internet at certain times, but we are assured not during the period when people are using them to vote.
the voting machines are purposely designed poorly.
I am no genius, but I did help make the internet what it is today and I can tell you how I would design them so they would be foolproof (I am sure a fool could find away though)
you have self contained touch screen voting machine to which you would upload the voter questions, when you are done voting you push the done button and it would print 2 copies of your votes with the same unique control number in an easily readable format so you could verify the votes were correct.
you drop one in the bin, and take the other one home with you. after votes were scanned and tallied you could enter your control number and the unique password that you chose while voting into the state website and verify that your vote was was counted and who you voted for.
