Republican President Donald Trump's low approval ratings, voter concern over high prices and dissatisfaction with the Iran war have led many analysts and opinion polls to predict significant Democratic gains in the November 3 midterm elections.
But six analysts and party strategists told Reuters several factors could prevent Democrats from turning those favorable political conditions into a landslide, even if the party ultimately makes gains in Congress.
Here are six reasons Democrats may fall short of expectations.
FEWER COMPETITIVE HOUSE RACES
The number of competitive US House races has shrunk sharply over the past three decades as partisan polarization and redistricting – including gerrymandering – have made more seats safely Democratic or Republican.
As a result, analysts estimate that only about 40 to 50 of the House's 435 seats are truly competitive this year.
Most expect Democrats to retake the lower chamber, but with a majority of perhaps 5 to 20 seats, limiting the scope for gains like those in 2018, when Democrats picked up 41 seats.
Bill Galston, a former White House adviser to President Bill Clinton, said even if Democrats gain 25 House seats, "they'd have a working majority, but not a huge one."
Such a majority would give Democrats control of the House but little room to maneuver, making it harder to pass contentious legislation or claim the sweeping mandate associated with past wave elections.
SENATE MAJORITY NO SURE THING
While Democrats are favored to make gains in the 100-member Senate, achieving the net gain of four seats needed for a 51-49 majority remains far from certain because many of their top pickup targets are in states Trump carried by wide margins in 2024.

The Senate is supposed to be the Adults In The Room.
Nov 2026 election results all depend on turnout. The Democrats have a ground game that will turnout their voters.
Will the R voters vote? Or will they stay home and yell at the screen? In GA Faith&Freedom, Students for Life are not what the pro-life ground game used to be... but it is better than nothing.
MAGA, 2d Amendment, anti-immigrant, pro-tariff and other factions of the coalition would rather be spectators than participants... or so it appears.
Dem, especially young voter, not really casting vote after talking a lot—

Doesn’t take a landslide just a simple majority as a result of selected cheating.
1-6: They are Batshit crazy.
BUT....
When the GOP wins it has off again, on again women like Murkowski and Rand Paul types who want pyrrhic victories as symbolism for losing causes and several others who want to cut off war funding or help the environment.
When the Dems win (at least under Pelosi) they are in total lockstep all the time without traitors. Yes, I've heard of that guy Fetterman--maybe everyone else has--the guy who vote 96% Dem all the time but goes on shows to gripe.
The new Dem majority will sway to the whims of the socialists and not look back. No "civil war" as the media is delusional about.
Most are compromised.
Would someone please run on congressional term limits, congressional mandatory retirement at 65 and ban congressional insider trading? Those three. Talk about them everyday on the campaign trail. Nothing else.
There is no enthusiasm for either party.
Translation: Our fake polls are not working.
If Al Reuters is reporting this, it must be very bad news for democrats.
Cracks in the rat facade as “news” outlets try and retain small shreds of credibility with hedges like this.

Outlet like Rooters will only push the Big Lie so far, for so long... then they’ll slow-walk it back in an attempt to save what tiny bit of credibility they have left.
Happens every cycle.
In the first three days of voting in Ohio and Georgia blue county voting is way down and red county voting is way up

Let them,
If they managed to succeed, and didn’t take Vance out first, that may be their undoing in 2028. Regardless of how anyone feels about Vance, if he turned the ship on all the economical increases, and was incumbent in 2028, I doubt the democrats would win.
Of course Democrats MAY fall short of the gains in Congress they currently anticipate/pray for. The underlying assumption of the lede is that “Democrats are most likely to win, and maybe it won’t be a landslide.”
Three weeks out and votes are being cast. President Trump is trying to shore up support in places like Texas and Ohio, FFS!
Oh, I paid over $8 for diesel today.
or the USAID money isn’t here to pay for our cheating
