1989 book claimed that “no fewer than 70" NFL games had been fixed

He says that “no fewer than 26" past and present team owners have documented ties to the gambling community and/or organized crime. Moldea also contends that, as of 1989, “no fewer than 70 NFL games have been fixed.”

Moldea’s claim was bolstered by bookmaker Don Dawson admitting to participating in the fixing of no fewer than 32 games. Dawson told Moldea that he rigged the final scores by working with the quarterback.

Moldea says that his book names players who were involved in fixing games, and that it identifies eight specific 1979 games that were fixed by two referees who were later investigated by the FBI and the IRS.

So how did none of this ever come to light at the time it was happening?>

“No fewer than 50 legitimate investigations of corruption within the NFL have been either suppressed or just flat-out killed as a result of a sweetheart relationship between NFL Security, which is the internal police force within the league, and a variety of federal and state and local law-enforcement agencies,” Moldea contends.

Sajak somewhat jokingly asks Moldea if he fears for his safety, given that the book delves into issues of organized crime.

I must assume that all of the picks in games that I lost were fixed. I hereby demand to be promoted to the top of the list! Harumph!

Let’s examine the demographics of the officials and players within the NFL...

The NFL is no more real than pro wrestling. Same for big time college football. DIII football is probably pretty close to being real, and most High School football is most likely real.

That’s nothing. I am sure that many games are fixed yearly now.

That’s entirely possible.

I’ve been building an AI NFL Betting Model using Anthropic’s Clause AI system.

One of the things we track in our NFL Model is referee tendencies.

Claude AI found a website that tracks NFL referees and gathers statistics on how their calls affect NFL Games.

There is one crew right now, refereeing every weekend that 68% of the time, the home team wins and covers the points spread.

This implies that if you bet the home team and laid the points in every game this crew referees you would get rich in a hurry.

In today’s game I believe it’s not players that fix games, it’s the referees.

After what I saw last weekend you can include the officials.

There’s no way all that was just happenstance.....NO WAY.

Moldea’s Free Republic article was back when the crybaby was trying to “get” us and defend “Rapin’ Bill” Clinton.

Surprised the old geezer is alive and kicking... 77 next February.

I am shocked I tell you. You know Jimmy Greek on the NFL when he predicted scores it was a nod nod wink wink to the book makers. I miss NFL Today with Jimmy, Jayne Kennedy and Phyllis and Irv. Good days.

Well, I like to gamble, but I quit any sports gambling 20 years ago, as it was obvious to me then, the fix was in on many games.

College is just as bad. I think basketball is the worst of the worst as far as game fixing.

My instincts were telling me that Sunday’s Lions game against the Panthers was rigged. I can’t prove that it was but I can’t prove that it wasn’t either.

When it comes to these types of questions, I hold to a simple principle: if there is a sufficient financial reason to do something (criminal), it will be done. Does importing drugs have a sufficient financial incentive? Yes (in the billions), so it will be done. Is there a sufficient financial incentive to fix sports, especially the major ones like the NFL, NBA, etc.? Yes (in the multi-millions), so it will be done.

It's similar to asking "Will that lion eat that gazelle?" Yes, if it's hungry.

In the 1980s, the NFL teams had far more whites than is the case in the 2020s. Corruption of professional sports because of gambling goes back to the Black Sox scandal of 1919, and probably earlier.
