Michael Whatley, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, was not happy about one poll showing him trailing by a wide margin.
Polls have consistently shown Whatley, the former head of the Republican National Committee, trailing former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) by five points or more. But one survey conducted by the Carolina Journal has Cooper ahead by 15, 49% to 34%.
On the campaign trail Friday, Whatley took questions from reporters, one of whom was Andrew Pomeranz of the offending publication. Pomeranz did not get very far with his question.
“Andrew Pomeranz, Carolina Journal,” the reporter began. “Coming into the–”
“You guys need a better pollster,” Whatley interrupted. “You guys have the worst pollster in the history of North Carolina. It’s absolutely unbelievable.”
Pomeranz started to ask his question again and noted that the polls “show you down,” at which point Whatley interrupted again.
“Well, every single poll has showed this race is tightening, except for yours, which is a trash poll, right?” the candidate shot back. “But the fact is that the polls have shown that this race is absolutely tightening, that we are right at [the] margin of error, and we’re gonna win, because I’ve been to all 100 counties. I have talked to the people on the coast. I’ve talked to the people up in the mountains. I’ve talked to the people in the cities. I talk to people on the farms. And what they want is to know, ‘Who are you gonna stand for?'”
The Carolina Journal describes itself as “a non-partisan news service of the John Locke Foundation.”

I have lived here my entire life and never have had someone randomly bring up Republicans in a negative way unprompted, EVER.
Until recently, it has happened at least THREE times in recent weeks. Out of the blue negative comment about Trump and the economy or the cost of things.
Take it for what it’s worth, just reporting what I am experiencing. Sorry if that is bad news. It is not like I WANT to be negative, but I am telling you SOMETHING is going on out there, and it doesn’t look good for us in my opinion.

Yesterday, Whatley was on a radio show (I think it was Hannity) and he said a poll (he didn’t say which one) had him down a few weeks ago by 11% but now the same poll has him down by just 4%. Wishful thinking? I don’t know.
Whatley isn’t going to lose by 15 points. No matter how much of a bloodbath 2026 is about to be for Republicans, GOP candidates without fatal flaws do not lose by anything like 15 points in a “purple” state.
[Exceptions: the 2026 PA Governor race and possibly the 2026 GA Senate race.]
Whatley’s margin of defeat might not be quite as low as 5 points either, however. When a candidate knows he’s whipped, and Whatley has been from the moment Roy Cooper announced, he concerns himself with trivialities like HOW MUCH he is going to lose by rather than focusing on the (admittedly infinitesimal in this case) probability of WINNING.
Whatley being anointed from On High so early, foreclosing the option for a better candidate in North Carolina, was stupid. And numerous people said so at the time. It’s hard to beat somebody with nobody.

The third quarter is going to print 5% growth and Texas is a huge part of that.
There is a huge wall of republican money coming into Texas to ensure those races swing back. In the last month the republicans will outspend the democrats by multiples.
Much of the campaigns will be negative. Love 3rd world sh-t holes? Want Texas to be a 3rd world sh-t hole? vote democrat. Love your criminals? Vote democrat. Want boys in girls bathrooms and girls sports? Vote democrat. Think God is a hermapherodite? Vote democrat?
There are thousands of variations on this.
Lara Trump should have run for the Senate in NC
I will check with my Texas relatives to see if they are experiencing the same things. I have had some sticker shock here in California recently. Sadly, most people do not understand that Democrats are mostly to blame for our current cost problems. Inflation is is once and always a monetary phenomenon: too many dollars chasing too few goods and services. The two great surges in our M2 money supply over the last two years occurred during the Obama and Biden administrations. Clearly, if your friends want even greater increases in the rate of inflation, Rhea should vote for Democrats.

Of course something is going on out there. It’s the same thing that’s been going on “out there and right here on this forum”. Leftist operatives pushing anti-GOP and anti-Trump propaganda. It’s nothing new... you just haven’t noticed before because now it is in ‘turbo-mode’. The leftists are determined and desperate... a very bad combination for America as founded.
Who cares. Repukes are in control of everything does that make your life better? A Democrat super Majority will only mean impeachments. On the plus side with less Repuke incumbents you can recycle the whole lot in 6 years. That would probably have been best, though the “Trump” name isn’t exactly gold in 2026 and she’d have been accused of carpetbagging (who does she think she is, Hillary?).
I don’t begrudge Lara her decision not to run, but when she declined the voters should have had a say in who the nominee would be. I highly doubt they would have chosen some unknown ineffective simp from the RNC whose supposed “advantage” was access to mega-fundraising sources (how’s that working out?).
There were numerous other candidates, no *less* known than Whatley was despite their relative anonymity, who could have been more inspirational to the base and more electable.
It’s barely possible for a Senate nominee in a competitive state to be LESS inspirational than Whatley, though some are trying (e.g. Jon Husted in Ohio). And if there’s anything the parties differ on in 2026, it’s inspiring their supporters.
It’s hardly an exaggeration in 2026 that all a Democrat has to do is say “I’m not a Republican” and they’re in like Flint. ALL Republicans have is “I’m not a Democrat”. That sort of worked in 2022 and 2024.
This year, that isn’t even close to being an effective strategy. Too bad they have nothing else.
