"US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is quietly removing some of the recruits it hired during last year’s rapid expansion, raising fresh questions about a hiring campaign that brought thousands of new employees into the agency — and about what happens to the generous incentives offered to attract them. An investigation by The Washington Post found that ICE has begun firing some employees recruited during the push to expand its immigration enforcement workforce.
The campaign was launched to provide additional manpower for the Trump administration’s mass-deportation programme. The rapid recruitment drive was backed by unusually large financial incentives.
What happens to the $50,000 signing bonus?
Under the funding provided through President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”, ICE can offer a signing bonus of up to $50,000. Recruits can also be eligible for up to $60,000 in student-loan repayment and premium pay of as much as 25%."

I'm calling BS on this.
I don’t know any of the details, but the new employee’s employment contract probably stipulated no criminal record, good moral character or some other requirement and the bonus payment was predicated on that. If the person lied, then the contract provides for repayment of the bonus.
I did a lot for hiring and firing in my career and would be shocked if the agreement did not carefully define the conditions under which the employee could keep the bonus and what would happen if the employee violated the terms.
Unless we can see the contracts, it will be nothing but speculation.
When he had a RIF in the Army a lot of privates who got bonus’ had to pay them back after they got out. Mostly they would take it out of tax refunds.
“I’m calling BS on this.”
Yep. Patently ridiculous.
When a new employee doesn’t work out, they’re let go. Usually, sign-on bonuses are attached to a certain length of time. I don’t see a problem here. Much ado about nothing, imo.
The privates who got bonuses had to pay them back?
What about the privates who never got bonuses? Did those guys have to pay them back too?
of course....they write a story of $50K bonuses...
Billions and billions and billions in medicaid fraud and other gov’t programs??? Nothing to see here...
Of course. It wouldn’t make sense to only penalize just the ones that got the bonus, now would it?
Did you even read the article you posted. Go away and spew this misinformation (lies) somewhere else. For others, the article outright says that they don’t know if the money was given to fired recruits let alone returned. The author states a hypothetical as the “real question” that should be asked, and that is, if they were given the 50K and fired, would they have to return it. Pure hypothetical BS, all of it.
The India Times citing the Washington Post. Sounds totally legit.
Also, happy one month FR anniversary!
1) The website is Indian, operating out of Mumbai.
2) The article 'reports on a report' -- this is about the Washington Post's report. "...according to an investigation by The Washington Post...."
3) "Aaron ben Aaron" joined FR on Aug 22, 2026.
Your 4th post on FR is this thread, and one of the 4 was a double post which makes this your 3rd post?
You also don’t respond.
So, the Repubs are practicing something unknown to the RATz...quality control. Any ICE recruit showing an IQ, ability, or honesty of a Democrat congresscritter is being eliminated. Well worth any cost. We’ve got enough slime in congress... (you listening AOC and associated Muslim buttkissing idiots)?
You signed up just to post this crap?
Every job applicant should be on probationary employment where it’s 6 mos, 1 or 3 years.
IMHO, pure BS!
Is this from the New York Times? Some affiliated source?
What’s even better is that the WashPo article was 90% about a suicide of a newly hired/fired agent and 10% on the hiring vetting process. Zero on the 50K payback “issue”.
