A cross-party group of MPs is urging the government to stop using real bear pelts to make the hats worn by the King's Guard and use fake alternatives instead.
In a letter to Defence Minister Luke Pollard, the group of 18 MPs and one peer across three parties - Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens - said the bearskin caps sourced from Canada should be replaced with fake fur to "meet today's ethical standards", adding that real bearskin is "impossible to justify".
"We call on you to instruct the Ministry of Defence and its suppliers to work proactively with manufacturers to develop and adopt a suitable faux fur alternative, in line with the government's commitment to advancing animal welfare," the letter continued, referring to Mr Pollard's previous opposition to real fur.
"Most urgently, while this process continues, bears are still being shot with crossbows and killed, their cubs orphaned, and their pelts used to produce new caps," it concluded.
According to FOI data obtained by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), orders for the caps have risen from 22 in 2024 to 96 in 2025.
The previous Conservative government said it had investigated a synthetic replacement, but no material had met the standards of real fur.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "The MoD backs replacing bearskin caps with a faux fur alternative and we have set five tests any alternative must pass.
"We are happy resuming work with PETA on an alternative should they wish to re-engage."

The name for the cap is, simply, bearskin. “Bearskin cap” is redundant.
The formerly great British get their bear skins from their lackeys in the Great White North. Canada has upwards of 400,000 black bears. Fretting over 90 is a waste of breath.

I am very surprised the real thing has not already been substituted for anything synthetic. Might have been overlooked. There are more burning issues in England besides what fur or material is used to make those hats. Immigration limits being only one of the issues.
And they should stop using Naugahyde for their belts, boots and scabbards too.
Naugas are very sensitive creatures and almost endangered.

The skins from which the hats are made are from overseas, because bears became extinct in Britain about a thousand years ago.
Yeah I see keffiyehs in their future.

The Brits did this once before, iirc back in the 70’s. And they sold off their entire stock of bearskins. I picked one up for $300 with a complete set of the regimental plumes, which are interchangeable.
They switched back to real bearskins a few years later. But the UK was still Britishback then, and could still elect a Thatcher.
The story mentions that the bearskins were adopted after Waterloo, but neglects to mention that they were a battle honor. In his last desperate push for victory as the Prussians had arrived and were crushing the French right, Napoleon committed the Old Guard to a final assault on the British center. As chance would have it, the Old Guard crashed into the British Guards Brigade, which shattered the charge. The Old Guard had made the bearskins famous. The British Guards have worn them ever since.
