One of the youngest mayors in Georgia history has been kicked out of office after he allegedly sent “sexually suggestive” texts and “explicit” images to a high school student, while also racking up thousands of dollars on the city’s credit card for personal expenses.
The city of Stockbridge’s city council voted on Saturday to remove Mayor Jayden Williams. The 23-year-old had just been named mayor 10 months earlier after running as a non-partisan candidate, becoming the second-youngest mayor in the state’s history when he was sworn in.
But he’s now out of a job after the city council examined several texts Williams sent to an 18-year-old male high school student. The messages started off tame, with Williams saying the student could be one of his “mentees.” But the messages quickly turned explicit, with Williams asking the student if he had “ever had sexual relations with a guy.”
“They also began sending photos and videos of each other using an Instagram feature that makes the images vanish after one viewing, often with responses that included hearts and drooling face emojis,” ABC 2 in Atlanta reported.
The mayor also texted the student at one point in all capital letters, “THIS BETTER STAY BETWEEN US TOO.”
Williams later told the city council he did not “recall” whether the texts included nude pictures of himself, but he did admit they were “explicit.”
The student was above the Georgia age of consent, so Williams does not face any legal issues for the messages.
Beyond the sexts, the city council gave Williams the boot for spending $4,000 of the city’s dough on personal expenses. Fox 5 Atlanta’s Annie Mapp reported Williams used city funds on haircuts, dinner bills, clothes, and a movie. He also spent another $2,600 on gas while using a city vehicle for personal trips, the city found.
Williams told the city council he did “not intentionally” use the city funds on personal expenses, and he had reimbursed many of those purchases. He also claimed he never got a copy of the city’s purchasing and ethics policy when he took office, so he wasn’t up to speed on it.
The city council didn’t buy the excuses and went forward with removing him from office.
“We concede that he could have asked more questions,” Williams’s attorney Robert Kenner said. “But there’s a difference between misunderstanding and removal from office.”
