Fatten Elkomy and brother worked for Islamic American Relief Agency that 'provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bin Laden in 1999'

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed last month highlighted how his mother “taught me so much about both how to stand with others, and how to stand alone.”
In a video posted to TikTok, the former Wayne County health official chatted on a porch swing with Jacqueline El-Sayed, a highly accomplished engineer from Gratiot County, about how his stepmother helped shape his views on life as she helped raise the progressive firebrand in Bloomfield Hills, an upscale suburb of Detroit.
Jacqueline El-Sayed married El-Sayed’s father, Mohamed El-Sayed, not long after he immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1980s with Fatten Fathy Elkomy, the U.S. Senate candidate’s birth mother.
“They ended up getting divorced,” El-Sayed said of his birth parents during a 2017 speech before the Islamic Foundation. “And my mother, she remarried a gentleman who was working as a translator in the Middle East and moved back to the Middle East.”
What happened after that is largely unclear, and El-Sayed has made little mention of his birth mother as he campaigns to become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history.
While El-Sayed, whose real name is Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, consistently spotlights his connections to Jacqueline El-Sayed’s family, including ads featuring his white grandparents, he’s produced no videos about what he’s learned from Elkomy, who eventually moved back to the U.S. to work as a nurse practitioner in Columbia, Missouri for decades.
And that’s likely by design.
From 1999 through at least 2004, Elkomy worked for the Islamic American Relief Agency, also known as the Islamic African Relief Agency, which operated over 40 offices throughout the world ostensibly focused on health care, orphans, and disadvantaged people in areas of conflict.
In October 2004, the U.S. Department of Treasury designated the worldwide network, along with five senior officials, as an organization supporting terrorism, including support for Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
According to a 2004 Treasury announcement:
IARA is identified as a non-governmental organization (NGO) formerly affiliated with Maktab Al-Khidamat (MK), which was co-founded and financed by UBL (Usama Bin Laden or Osama bin Laden) and is the precursor organization of al Qaida.
Information available to the U.S. indicates that international offices of IARA provided direct financial support for UBL. IARA, MK and UBL commingled funds and cooperated closely in the raising and expenditure of funds. IARA engaged in a joint program with an institute controlled by UBL that was involved in providing assistance to Taliban fighters.
In 2000, one of IARA’s Afghanistan leaders accompanied the Afghanistan MK leader on a fundraising trip to Sudan and other locations in the Middle East during which $5 million was raised for MK activities.
Information available to the U.S. shows that the overseas branches IARA provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to UBL in 1999.
The announcement alleged IARA also supported Hamas and other terrorist organizations through at least 2003.
In March 2007, the Department of Justice charged IARA-US with a 33-count indictment for illegally transferring funds to Iraq, violating federal sanctions. A superseding indictment followed in January 2008, and in 2010 two of IARA’s board of directors pleaded guilty to conspiring to move more than $1 million to Iraq.
Evidence used to secure those convictions in USA v IARA included 945 exhibits detailing phone calls, faxes, wire transfers, tax forms, emails, bank statements and other documents.
The list of exhibits, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri in May 2010, references Elkomy 14 times, documenting participation in eight wire transfers, and five recorded calls between 1999 and 2002, including an IARA-USA transfer-request form for $24,607.34 to its Iraq office.
Elkomy’s brother and El-Sayed’s uncle, Mohamed or Mohammed Elkomy, was also listed in 19 exhibits involving phone calls between donors, IARA officials, and others.
While neither Elkomy was ever charged with a crime or named as a co-conspirator, and none of the individuals involved in the case were ever charged with terrorism-related crimes, IARA-USA pleaded guilty in court for conspiring to violate sanctions by illegally funneling nearly $1.4 million to Iraq and agreed to dissolve the organization in 2016.
“The plea agreement acknowledges that, due to its designation as a specially designated global terrorist and the subsequent blocking of all its property, IARA has no funds readily available to it to pay any fine,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office wrote in a July 2016 announcement.
Elkomy denied any connections between IARA and terrorists in comments to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 2004.
“I’ve been working there serving orphans and children with at least one deceased parent, and it breaks my heart they’re not going to get any help,” she said.
Eklomy still lives in Missouri, where she works for the New Horizons Community Support Services Agency and The Islamic School of Columbia.
“Dr. Elkomy is a trained Psychiatric/Mental Health Provider, with 13 years of experience. She graduated from Alexandria University, School of Medicine, Alexandria, Egypt in 1983,” her bio on the school website reads.
“Got her dual master’s degrees in Health Administration & Health Informatics from University of Missouri-Columbia. Additionally, Dr. Elkomy got master’s and doctoral degrees in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from the same university in 2013 and 2014 respectively. She has been working as a Nurse Practitioner since then,” the bio reads. “Dr. Elkomy is currently working at New Horizons Community Support Services Agency since 2018.”
El-Sayed has largely refrained from any reference to Elkomy on the campaign trail, though he did leverage her title during a campaign stop in Lansing last year, when he discussed his concerns about instances where “folks fall off” health insurance, including “people with serious mental issues.”
“So the answer is that people have the same insurance over the course of their lives that does not depend on them being employed, or them meeting a particular income threshold, which is, of course, Medicare for All,” he said.
“I say this as my mother is a psychiatric NP and my wife is a psychiatrist,” El-Sayed said.

So to clarify, El-Sayed’s mother seems to be the one with the radical connections. She divorced his dad in the 1980s. His step-mother, Jacqueline El-Sayed (nee Johnson), seems to be an engineer and CEO who married his father and converted to Islam.
