FIFA has left hotels across the US in the lurch after mass booking rooms in host cities before cancelling the majority of them.
One host city hit particularly hard by Fifa’s movements ahead of the World Cup has been Kansas City, Missouri.
Per the Kansas City Star, Fifa reserved up to 5000 rooms per night for many of the evenings that its officials and business partners would be in town.
That means that Fifa will have reserved tens of thousands of rooms across the month-long tournament in the city alone.
But as soccer’s greatest international tournament drew closer, the governing body canceled the majority of those reservations.
They are not alone either in the US with hotel bookings slumping nation wide only weeks before from the World Cup.

So people can book rooms at discounted rates.
That soccer, never could understand that. Anything a five year old can do ain’t a sport. Marcus.
I was in the DFW area in Texas earlier this year, and so many business owners, restaurant owners, etc... were excited about gearing up for the World Cup. One place was already getting catering reservations in advance.
In this economy, every little boost helps. But the very things hurting business owners (war, inflation) are the things that will tarnish the success of Fifa and the Olympics here.
It’s not the sport of soccer that this hurts, it’s the American business owners and cities that were expecting a boost.
Sorry, but soccer is not huge here, and the USA is very expensive to visit for people from where it is popular.
I’m purposely avoiding areas where the games will be held, Atlanta particularly.
I’m also going to bet that the hotels increased their prices by 300% or 400% to try to cash in before the bottom fell out. This happens all the time.
Can’t imagine the fumigation costs when some of these teams and their fans stay in those hotels for three or four days. Wouldn’t go near the stadiums either.
Starts tomorrow. Soccer is still not that popular here, and there aren’t enough rich liberals to fill the seats. Prices for hotels, ground transportation and actual tickets are sky high, with few takers. All the ‘host cities’ planning to gouge visitors are not happy.
Watching a bunch of foreigners in shorts running all day kicking a round ball and scoring very little?
And pay money for it?
I don’t think so.
New headline: “Commie Kickball Can’t Put Butts In Seats”. I mean come on, it’s Kansas City. Doesn’t anybody do market research anymore?
I’d rather watch my Pet Rock than a soccer game.
I second that motion.
Or maybe it's just that both of those events suck.
They just blew up a large, nice hotel near the “Dallas” stadium. Those rooms obviously weren’t needed, or they would have postponed the demolition until after the tournament.
Dallas is planning to close off streets downtown to make them more pedestrian friendly, and low-end businesses all over the metroplex have been hoping to bank on much needed boost. Not just high-end.
Haven't watched much high level soccer, have you. In elementary school, the players run around all game. At the higher level, most of the players will be standing around or walking much of the game.
I’m thinking right now of the money I will save by not going to any World Cup Games. Of course I will have to admit I wouldn’t be going even if they paid me.
That should keep folks from getting to the local businesses. And Elon Musk doesn't have enough money to pay me to go to the activities at Fair Park.
The foot traffic will be welcome for many. And some businesses will set up shop as vendors and food trucks.
