Gunshot Detection Technology Disabled [semi-satire]
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 24 May 2026 | John Semmens

The city of Cambridge in Massachusetts has disabled its gunshot detection system--ShotSpotter--under pressure from leftist political activists. Stephanie Guirand, a member of the group "The Black Response" pointed out that "it disproportionately affects racial and ethnic groups that have higher propensities to commit crimes using guns than white folks. This is intrinsically racist and should not be allowed. Let the police use the investigation techniques they used before this technology existed."

Spencer Piston, a Boston University political science professor, said "this technology could lead to more arrests of undocumented immigrants. Arrests mean fingerprints, mug shots, and addresses will be recorded and kept. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could access this information, track down the individuals suspected of committing crimes, apprehend and deport them. Massachusetts is a sanctuary state. We should be protecting these immigrants from ICE."

Police Commissioner Pauline Wells begged the City Council not to deactivate the devices, saying "there have been multiple instances where this technology has saved lives. Since young Black men are more likely to be shot than any other segment of the population this system will save more of their lives."

The City Council decided to "pause the operation of the technology for 90 days. We don't want to go off half-cocked. Let's take a little more time to evaluate the pluses and minuses of the system. Technologies that can have disparate impacts on our essential goal of diversity, equality and inclusion among different sectors of society mustn't be allowed to be abused."

Memphis paid to procure and commission "Shot-Finder" in 2021 using grant money. It worked flawlessly.

As so, they discontinued its use. Most crime is crime they want to perpetuate. There are over 1,800 NFP'S and NGO'S in Memphis, earning large on continued gun violence. That pays for everything from condos in white sandy places to Two Mercedes in the garage.

No hand biting the feeder.

Every public event, ask Steve Mulroy why he's no longer using shot finder? City council. Mayor. School board. Sheriff. Police Chief. Steve Cohen. Justin Pearson......

Why did you shut down the shot finder systems in Memphis???

Chicago’s POS mayor did the same thing. He thinks the system was made from walkie-talkies on sticks. I suspect that he chewed up quite a bit of lead-based paint as a kid.

Liberals must have gone to those philosophy classes where the question was asked, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is thee to hear it, did it make a sound”. So, if a drive-by drops someone and Shotspotter doesn’t hear it, did the person actually die of a gunshot? That’s bad for the crime stats.

Now when someone reports a shooting in the neighborhood, the police should just respond “Strange, we didn’t hear anything”.

Does she have any idea how stupid this sounds. If it detects gunshots, a response is necessary. Here's an idea: Rather than disable the equipment that detects the gunshots, why not try to get the "racial and ethnic groups" to stop pulling the trigger.

I am one that sides with the lefties on this issue. My freedom isn’t a surveillance state! Gunshot detectors, flock cameras everywhere, all our data running through nsa servers, when is it going to start bothering people that we are watched all the time?

What’s next? Demanding that police stop wearing body cameras because they’re disrupting the narrative?
