To sceptics, Donald Trump’s war in Iran is a hubristic blunder that could spiral further out of control and bring catastrophe to the world. To Lindsey Graham, it is a dream come true.
The Republican senator from South Carolina spent decades spoiling for a fight with the regime in Tehran. He claimed that its overthrow would give the US president his own “Berlin Wall moment”. Now he is urging further escalation by invoking the bloody battle of Iwo Jima from the second world war.
For Graham’s critics, his sway over Trump, and his seemingly insatiable appetite for war at any cost, might make him the most dangerous man in Washington.
“Lindsey’s probably the most pro-war Republican out there,” said Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman turned Democrat. “He’s certainly the most visible. We’re talking about a guy who, if he could, would have American troops everywhere on the planet engaged in some sort of a war. He’s a war-hungry dude and he’s got Trump’s ear.”
Graham, 70, a retired air force reserve colonel who specialised as a military lawyer, was hostile to Iran long before Trump arrived on the political scene. Serving in the House of Representatives in the 1990s, he supported attempts to isolate the country and curb its missile and nuclear programmes.

Homo Graham needs to retire to Palm Springs where he can be his true self.
If Lindsey Graham is on your side, you’re doing something wrong.
Exactly.
Don’t like Graham. However, he was answering a question about logistical support. He referenced Iwo Jima, an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, because the United States could support that battle location logistically.
The Guardian opposes President Trump’s foreign policy in the Middle East?
The "issues" of whatever war do not enter into his calculation.
All wars are wars for markets, if war itself is a market.
If every Democrat is on your side (shall I list them), you're doing something wrong.
See how that works?
The question is, just who is on our side these days?
We needed him to make sure Strom Thurmond’s seat didn’t go away. Whitewater made him shine. He’s been resting on his laurels. Don’t know if his primary challenger is up to it but there aren’t many who will take on an established incumbent. Paxton perhaps but Cornyn went too wobbly for his own good. Who’s gonna challenge Thune down the road-Noem? That would be a good fight amongst the conservatives in a conservative state. Lankford is overdue. The Rand Pauls and Susan Collins’ out there can be countered with a 55 seat majority.
Lindsay Graham has come to a valid conclusion about Iran and if he were totally frank about the effect of Islam on the world. At his core he is a globalist and views American power as the catalyst to implement his dream. While many Americans agree with him that Iran is a threat to the world, very few want to shed blood and treasure to serve as that catalyst. Americans support foreign entanglements and foreign wars only if their country is directly attacked.
Doubt it. He's just getting paid by his donors (MIC).
Lindsay Graham has been consistent. He has never met a foreign entanglement he did not like.
It is Trump who might be changing his position.
That leaves yet to be answered the question:
Were our forefathers correct in opposing foreign entanglements? Or is Lindsay Graham right?
Or is it a case where a broken clock is correct 2 times a day?
It’s US against the World. Always has been. Trump just made it more easy to see.
Graham is an ignorant opportunistic lying SOB.
The huge difference from then to today is that the Japanese had no stand off defenses. Meaning no missiles like they have now.
My Uncle was aboard the USS Missouri during those landings in the CIC and was one responsible for assessing the bombing damage on Japanese positions.
Said that no matter how much they blowed the hell out of those positions, the Japenese survived and came out and fought like hell.
Since Graham is so heroic he needs to be the first to step on shore and show everyone how its done according to his sick demented assinine mind.
Surprised you didn't mention Murkowski. Alaska is a special case. We really do need to get rid of open primaries.
Iran has been attacking us since the Shah fell.
Once in awhile Linseed gets it right. Not often but once in awhile.
“Doubt it. He’s just getting paid by his donors (MIC).”
This.
