Make Families, Not War
The American Conservative ^ | Mar 23, 2026 | Ivana Greco

American families are in crisis…

In the U.S., fewer young people are getting married, and they are having fewer children. They struggle to afford a first house…

Groceries are expensive; mortgage rates and housing prices are crushing. Whatever the future holds, America’s young parents know it almost certainly will include having to take care of aging Boomers and their own small children at the same time, with a demographic structure more weighted toward the elderly than at any other time in history…

The current administration and Congress were elected at least in part on promises to meet these challenges. And, indeed, they did begin to make right on them. The One Big Beautiful Bill contained a significant expansion of the Child Tax Credit and other tax credits for middle-class American families. Republicans in Congress expected to go into the midterms able to boast about securing billions to support working families. The new Trump Accounts promise to make it easier for the parents of today’s babies to send them to college one day…

The prevailing winds on federal family policy were good for a time, but now the administration has changed course.

America’s young parents will pay much of the price for this new war.

Many of those in the Armed Forces who’ve lost their lives are mothers and fathers. They include a Minnesota mother of two, whose youngest child is in fourth grade. They also include a father of three, who made sure to prep meals for his wife before deploying so she could pull them out of the freezer when caring for their young kids, including twin babies.

America’s ordinary parents will also pay out of pocket—and not just through taxes.

Maybe if we didn’t bring over 6 million or so foreigners (H1B), in the last 10 years, to take all of our highest paying jobs, things would be a little less difficult for the younger generations.

We were supposed to be wiped out during the Cold War. Reagan - possibly the last traditional President we had - effectively snuffed that last real and great threat.

Since then, we’ve been fed a bunch of fear pr0n like WMD from Saddam, or just like NK will nuke us if we don’t do X, terrorists are gonna blow dirty bombs in Manhattan, and the latest one, you’ll die of Covid if you don’t take the shots, wear a mask, or embrace communism.

Meanwhile, the next Gen of Americans may not exceed their parents’ quality of life.

Neocon trolls and left wing authoritarians have tried boogeymen for decades and gotten the best of people.

Won’t get fooled again. The local hoods and criminals are more of a threat to our life, liberty and property than the mullahs of Iran.

We voted for America, not World Policeman.

This isn't just a US phenomenon - outside of Africa, pretty much every nation is having fewer children. China and India, the two most populous nations on the planet, now have reproductive rates below the replacement rate. This seems to be the common experience as nations become wealthier.

The weapons have already been made and paid for.

Oh the adults now-a-days are not having kids.. Too much responsibility.
Now-a-days, kids are being replaced with the dog. It sickens me to see people treating their pets like children.
Not being a pet owner, I'll never understand it, I suppose.

But there ya have it.. Dogs not kids.....See how that is gonna work for the census, or the legacy, or the old age, or.... .

The system must favor the aged or people would bolt the system before getting old.

I’ve basically made a bet that I’ll live to be at least 90 years old.

“Groceries are expensive”

Who should make less? The farmers? The pickers? The packers? The grocery store stockers? The 1% margin grocery store owners?

“mortgage rates”

The mortgage rates are lower than any of my relatives or myself have ever paid, as far as I know.

“housing prices are crushing”

They represent what people are willing to pay. Probably less than 3% of homebuyers throughout American history have cause to regret paying what they paid.

With debt the next generations will be expected to pay but suspect in 10 years there will be a groundswell movement to repudiate the debt, social security and basically everything

Older GenX here and my kids despite growing up with substantially more debt resources than I had are having a hell of a lot harder time keeping up much less getting ahead

My mother had 4 husbands and drug me through her
EFFing mess of a life, until I was old enough to escape.
I got married and I was determined to not allow that to happen to any of my kids should my wife turn out to be like my Mother.
That is part of the reason people aren’t having kids.
Divorce laws. Too easy to give up and quit.
FYI, been married to the same woman 49 years now. Regrets,
I have them. Regrets don’t hurt as much as Divorces do.

Cool.

Then there’s no need to pass the $200bn pork/Iraq War bill.

Good to know.

You will have to do something about divorce settlements. Men don’t have any rights.

One thing they have in common — generous welfare states.

They'll get conquered by North Korea.

So true. Some of them even refer to themselves as the pet’s mom or dad. 🙄

Unlike you, I have had pets. Numerous pets. But I don’t get it either.

Married >30 years and divorced and got nearly everything I wanted after and actual trial

It’s doable but not if you are a fuck up
