Beriev A-50U radar planes are Russia’s eyes in the sky. As Ukraine knocks out more of the A-50Us, Russian forces are slowly going blind.
Russia went to war in February 2022 with potentially just seven Beriev A-50U radar planes
The A-50Us use top-mounted radars to watch for Ukrainian warplanes and drones
In a series of attacks going back three years, the Ukrainians may have knocked out more than half of the A-50Us
A drone strike last week reportedly damaged a fourth A-50U on the ground in western Russia
Sortieing drones deep inside Russia on 17 March, Ukrainian forces may have damaged one of the few Beriev A-50U radar planes left in the Russian air force's depleted inventory. Moscow's air force isn't blind. But it may be more blind than it was just a few days ago.
One of potentially five surviving A-50Us was on the tarmac at the 123rd Aviation Repair Plant in Staraya Russa, in Novgorod Oblast 630 km from the Russia-Ukraine border, when drones attacked. There was "confirmed damage to the aircraft," as the drones apparently punched holes in the roof of a large hangar, the Ukrainian general staff reported.

An Ukrainian FPV drone downed a Russian Kamov Ka-52 „Alligator“ helicopter. The crew initially survived the crash, but was subsequently targeted and destroyed by more FPV drones.
Shall we review the low IQ status of the CIA?
The ones who hate America, and who supported the current fraudulent government of the Ukraine?
Their low IQ is demonstrable.
What is it with you? Who gives a hoot about this? I slightly can understand Reverend Barb she is being true to her late husband, but give it a break.
No matter who or what air force.... it’s a low life move to seek out and murder aircrews that survive a crash. You capture and if they resist, then it’s on.
I do. Thanks for posting this RWC. Long ago I figured out how to skip over articles I wasn’t interested in reading. It’s actually easier than you think.
Let me give you a tip you don't seem to be familiar with, you are not required to open every thread, you can skip threads.
Ukraine has downed, destroyed or damaged 5 out of Russia’s 10 A-50s in this war.
An A-50 costs around $350 million
Ukraine liquidated Russian soldiers on Russian-controlled territory in Russian-occupied Ukraine.
That is very much allowed by the Geneva Convention and international law.
Radar emissions are a natural fire attractant. There have been anti-radar missiles almost as long as there has been radar. The Nazis developed one — the Blohm & Voss 246 Hailstone — back in WWII.
The Beriev A-50 (in the photo) was developed from the Ilyushin Il-76, one of the most successful planes the Soviets ever built. But you can tell what a dinosaur it is by the skinny engine nacelles.
This is a big deal for long-range Ukrainian drone attacks deep into Russia.
