You’ve heard of Optimist International, the global service organization. If there were a “Pessimist International,” MS NOW military analyst Barry McCaffrey could be kicked out of it — for being too darn negative.
Caution is warranted when predicting U.S. success in foreign military operations. Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq remain sobering reminders.
But appearing on MS NOW’s continuing Iran coverage last night, retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey — Bill Clinton’s former drug czar — took pessimism to new heights. In roughly two minutes, McCaffrey declared success in key American objectives in Iran “unlikely” four separate times — and added a “not likely” for good measure.

“Barry McCaffrey — Bill Clinton’s former drug czar”
pmsnow had to really scrape the bottom of the barrel to find this relic......which tells me negative opinion to Operation Epic Fury must be scarce.
CNN/MSNOW “talent” - When one’s IQ is so low that the cannot even get a “eddikashun degree” and join the NEA.
Well, his stock in the trade has been waaaay down for a king time.
Dogs lick the hand which feeds them.
Because he KNOWS THAT HE WAS A FAILURE AND COULDN’T PULL THIS OFF!
McCadaver is a dinosaur that nobody with two brain cells would believe, which is why he is on a show nobody will see.
What do the “non-victories” in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan have in common? The Rules of Engagement (ROE) were set by politicians, rather than the generals who are trained to make those decisions. By dicking around in such conflicts, politicians protract the war, resulting in more deaths in the long run. Politicians insist of fighting a “nice” war. That’s a myth. Nice wars don’t exist. They are messy, ugly, and should be dispatched as quickly as possible. Let the military run the wars and keep the politicians out of its management.
That FACE! Holy moly! Is that boy even ALIVE? Or is it MS NOW AI?
And I don’t think Hesgeth is interested in nice.
McCaffery was a good and honorable combat soldier in Vietnam and lead the flanking maneuver in Desert Storm. He left service, joined Clinton’s cabinet, and became a left wing Democrat. The rest is anti Republican consulting career.
I know it violates FR traditions, but read the attached article.
What McCaffrey actually says is quite correct. A decapitation strike isn’t going to bring down the regime. Without followup, nothing of lasting substance will be achieved. The regime will regroup and continue as before.
So are we prepared to follow up, or not?
Regime change requires boots on the ground. None of us want to see American boots on the ground. Of course we would prefer allies to do the heavy lifting. And the goal would be to get a stable Iranian regime in place that is willing to drop its nuclear ambitions, stop supporting international terrorism, and live in peace with the rest of the world.
So yes: the latest round of U.S.-Israeli strikes will fail to accomplish anything in the long run unless we are prepared to followup.
Air raids followed by tweetstorms aren’t going to do the job. Could we at least organize and support a guerilla insurgency against the mullahs’ regime in Tehran, i.e. do to Iran what it did in Iraq. Ok, start there. Look at a map. Tell me which of Iran’s neighbors will be willing to work long-term with the U.S. and Israel to provide secure bases, staging areas and supply corridors to support an insurgency?
Is there a faction in the Iranian military that is willing to do the necessary? If there is, this would be a heckuva good time for it to act. Do we have any idea of whether this is possible? That might be the easiest way forward, but it remains to be seen.
Time is of the essence. Everyone in the world is reading the U.S. electoral tea leaves, and most understand that the democrats have largely gone over to the other side. If the mullahs’ regime is going to be replaced, it must be eradicated root and branch. Now.
I don’t think so, either, which is why he should run the show and not a bunch of pantywaists reacting to the news published by Iran, Hamas, and every other terrorist organization on the planet.
Know nothing of this guy, but if the country is 90% Shiite, trying to impose a US puppet government there is indeed unlikely to be successful.
The US puppet gov’t imposed in Afghanistan was a failure. We were also fed the same line of crap about the populace longing for freedom from Taliban theocracy and would rise up blah blah and with the US puppet govt in place all would be well.
That failed completely. These Muslim countries do not want puppet governments installed. They reject that. The narrative that they need to be smashed is coming from the Sunni side of the equation who have the ear of neocons, not from the internal populace.
A Clinton toad….all you need to know. Didn’t bother reading after that.
He’s a four star idiot. He needs to find another way to cash in, then making a fool of himself.
