A 30-year-old man was slashed in the face and stabbed in the back during an early-morning attack in Times Square on Wednesday, according to the New York Police Department, as investigators continued searching for multiple suspects involved in the assault, as reported by The New York Post.
Police said the attack occurred around 1:50 a.m. near the intersection of West 40th Street and Seventh Avenue, an area heavily trafficked by pedestrians even during overnight hours.
Officers responding to the scene found the victim suffering from a slash wound to his face and a stab wound to his back.
Authorities said three individuals were involved in the assault. Two of the suspects fled the scene on foot, running southbound on Seventh Avenue.
Police have not released descriptions of the suspects and have not confirmed whether weapons were recovered.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported by emergency medical personnel to Bellevue Hospital. Police said he was listed in stable condition.
No update on his condition was immediately available later Wednesday.
Investigators have not determined whether the attack was random or targeted. Police said the circumstances leading up to the violence remain under review, including whether there was any prior interaction between the victim and the assailants.
The NYPD confirmed that one person of interest is currently in custody, though no charges have been filed. Officials did not disclose where or when that individual was taken into custody or how the person may be connected to the incident.
Detectives continued canvassing the area on Wednesday, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and city cameras in an effort to track the suspects who fled.
The intersection of 40th Street and Seventh Avenue is surrounded by theaters, retail stores, and restaurants, many of which are equipped with security cameras.
Times Square has seen periodic violent incidents during overnight hours, despite the area’s reputation as one of the most heavily policed locations in New York City.
Police have increased patrols in the area in recent years, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours, citing concerns over assaults, robberies, and other street crimes.
Authorities urged anyone with information about the incident to contact police. As of Wednesday, investigators said they were still working to establish a motive and piece together a timeline of events leading up to the attack.
The investigation remains ongoing.
