NYC Bus Fares Raised To $3 Despite Mamdani's Promise To Make It Free

How it started:

Zohran: "A key reason we have to make the bus free is it reduces assauIts" pic.twitter.com/Wmmuv8TOWs— End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) October 16, 2025

How it's going:

So if free bus rides reduce assaults then what does raising the fare to $3 do?

I don't believe the nonsense talking point, but it's a question that needs to be asked.

The fares are up from $2.90, so they only went up by a dime. Still, New Yorkers are not happy about it -- and if you're a commie, I thought you executive-order that free ride right away, not let the price increase.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) approved the price increase back in September, but boy does it have to feel like a slap in the face to New Yorkers that their socialist hero Mamdani just let it happen.

I think about 40% of subway riders jump the turnstiles. Not sure how many bus riders ride for free.

People who pay must feel like chumps.

Even worse, the turnstile junpers tend to be parasitic, criminal vagrants who make riding miserable for the fare payers.

A friend of mine owns a bar in a college town. His beers are the most expensive on the street. He does that on purpose, to keep drunken college kids out. He doesn’t want their business.

So Mamdani has a point, but only in theory. In actuality he’s lying to justify the rate increase. Because a 10 cent increase won’t make a bit of difference to someone who is violent and insane.

It’s an example of how subsidies, no matter how they are paid or given, never reduce prices and only support (encourage) an economically inefficient market in what is subsidized.

In the case of the NYC buses and subways system there had no incentive for their operations to be less costly because the subsidies have always supported the overly costly MTA bus and subway system.

The actual cost for a bus or single-trip subway ride is more then $3.00 but many forms of taxpayer subsidies will pay the rest, or at least attempt to, as MTA deficits continue in spite of hefty subsidies.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority controls all the public transport for NY City and surrounding counties on Long Island, Westchester and even as far as Duchess County

Their 23 member board (which is appointed by the Governor of NY, NY City mayor, and surrounding counties) decide on all operating details of NY’s subways, busses, etc...

NY City Mayor gets to appoint, in total, 4 voting members of the board, when previous appointees terms roll over.

So Mamdani himself has almost zero control over fare structure for subways and busses.

His campaign slogans were 100% pure marxist bullshit.

Does Mamdani/City of New York even set the fares? My understanding is that this is all done by the MTA, which includes New Jersey and Connecticut. I’m thinking that Mamdani has to pass everything he wants to do past the MTA, including some way of satisfying NJ and CT who never signed on to free rides. In the meanwhile, a zombie system of fare pricing continues with inflationary increases.

Thanks for the detail.

By raising expectations he cannot meet Mandami is probably going to cause more violence.

By raising expectations he cannot meet Mamdani is probably going to cause more violence.

Mamdani has most control over NYC police and local crime adjudication. So in that sense, assuming he implements his stupid woke schemes, overall crime will increase

Otherwise though, regarding transport, property regulations, offers for universal child day-care, health care costs - Mamdani's real influence and control goes from "some" to "almost none."

Pushing his ideology will certainly cause quite enough chaos and fear, with no potential for real results. As such, I believe that he will quickly become a hated lame-duck very quickly.
