Avoidable Tragedy: Repeat Offender Allegedly Kills Someone Mere Days After Nonprofit Pays for Bail

Few subjects are more touchy that the topic of criminal justice.

From the George Floyd incident to “defund the police,” everybody appears to have a strong opinion on the matter.

That also holds true for the criticism that leftists are far too soft on crime, oftentimes to the detriment of society.

Tragically, the issue reared its ugly head again recently after a horrific shooting in Ohio.

According to Fox News, a repeat offender criminal shot and killed an Ohio man just days after a liberal nonprofit had helped pay for his bail, thus getting him out of prison.

“Donnie Allen allegedly shot and killed 27-year-old Benjamin McComas at a Cleveland light rail station around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14,” Fox News reported.

Before this tragic incident, Allen had built himself quite a rap sheet.

Fox News reviewed court documents revealing that Allen had previously been busted in a Dec. 4 incident that charged with drug possession, breaking and entering, vandalism, obstructing official business, and possessing criminal tools.

Those charges stemmed from a separate incident at a Cleveland light rail station.

Make no mistake, Allen appears to be a career hoodlum.

Allen is a repeat offender who has pleaded guilty or been convicted of a number of crimes over the last several years.

In 2024, he was charged with two counts of attempted burglary, assault on a peace officer, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, and drug possession. In 2022 and 2021, he was charged with burglary. In 2019, he was charged with two additional counts of burglary and one count of criminal damaging.

Despite this lengthy rap sheet, Judge Joy Kennedy — whose long advocated for bail reform — saw fit to lower Allen’s bail for his Dec. 4 incident from $15,000 to $5,000.

From there, a liberal activist group called The Bail Project ponied up the 10 percent ($500) to get Allen out of jail.

When confronted about this, The Bail Project stopped short of expressing regret.

“The Bail Project condemns violence and we are deeply concerned by the recent allegation involving Mr. Allen,” the group told Fox News Digital.

The group further explained: “Our mission at The Bail Project is to ensure that people are not jailed pretrial solely because they cannot afford bail. Our organization exists to address inequities in a system where wealth often determines who remains incarcerated before trial.

“Any loss of life is a tragedy, and we remain committed to building a fairer, more just pretrial system that respects due process, promotes safety, and avoids a misguided reliance on cash bail.”

Fox News tersely added that the group didn’t respond when further asked whether they had considered Allen’s lengthy criminal past when covering his bond.

Social media was awash with fury over McComas’ seemingly avoidable death:

Allen is currently charged with aggravated murder and has been arraigned on a $1 million bond.

The judge needs to be charged for human rights violations. Our side needs to bankrupt these pigs if we can’t get Congress to do its job.

The Bail Project should be held criminally liable.

I totally agree. At a minimum they should immediately loose their job with no possibility of appeal.

It is one thing to bail out non-violent criminals.

I may not always approve but I can see it.

But violent criminals? There is something wrong with their brain boxes unless they actually want more people hurt.

And if they do they need to just come out and say it.

We like seeing people hurt because we are a bunch of prancing pansies who could never work up the nerve to actually do it ourselves so we bail out violent thugs so they will do it for us. Yippy Skippy.

Just be honest.

I posted this on a thread yesterday...I was thinking along these lines:
"...The Bail Project condemns violence and we are deeply concerned by the recent allegation involving Mr. Allen..."

There have been many rage-inducing comments in 2025, but there is something about this one that goes right to the heart of the matter in a way that makes it stand out for me.

Incredible.

There is something of the parable of The Frog and The Scorpion in this, but it presents in a couple of different ways:

To be fair, it is easier to image the first interpretation rather than the second, because in the second, there are a lot of people who simply don't make that connection at all. A characteristic of Leftist thought is the broad area covered in a given thought process, but the depth of that same broad area is only a nanometer deep. Scratch more than a nanometer deep through that broadest of thoughts, and one encounters a dark emptiness. That covers the dedicated Leftists.

The people in general who votes for Democrats range from people on the cusp of becoming dedicated Leftists to people who are working so hard for a living they aren't lifting their heads to look around. They are the ones who, when the teenage kids come in with a "Black Lives Matter" sign and say "Dad, can we put this on the lawn?" look up from the task at hand, and mumble "Sure. Go ahead. Not too close to the road."

So, a lot of those people in the second interpretation above don't make the connection that voting for Candidate A is what makes possible Organization B. They know their vote makes Candidate A possible, and they kind of liked him.

To bluntly state that Candidate A not only makes Organization B possible, but that Candidate A ACTUALLY encouraged and supported Organization B (both legislatively and financially) to pay bail money to get people OUT of confinement who NEEDED DESPERATELY to be behind bars to protect citizens would possibly get the point across to many of those people who mumble at their kid about the lawn sign and are too busy to lift their heads up and look around.

But they rarely ever hear the situation put that way, which is just as the Left wants it. And we get wholly predictable outcomes like this.

Is this the same Bail Project that Kamala Harris supported?

The judge should be tried along with the killer - she is responsible for allowing him to go free by reducing bail.

The Bail Project condemns violence

No you don't. You advocate for putting violent criminals back onto the streets to attack innocent victims, as in this case.

You are a terrorist organization and should be treated as such.
