Alberta gets OK to begin collecting signatures for referendum to leave Canada

While President Trump has half-joked about Canada becoming the 51st state of the U.S., arguably the "reddest" province in that nation now expects a voter referendum in 2026 asking residents if they'd like to secede from the motherland.

A court had previous stopped an effort to put the question before Albertans, but now the province's election commission has given the OK for organizers to begin collecting signatures.

According to Global News, Elections Alberta says the proponent, the Alberta Prosperity Project, and its chief executive officer, Mitch Sylvestre, have until early January to appoint a financial officer for its petition campaign, after which signature collection can begin.

The group then would have four months to collect just under 178,000 signatures.

In the grand scheme of things, Hawaii doesn’t have much to offer besides good weather, coffee, macadamia nuts, pot and its strategic position.........

Canadians do not want to be part of us as we stand now..maybe when doge fully accomplishes it’s objective....but I feel a kinship with Alberta ,living here in the captured state of Washington.

Most of BC does vote for conservative. If you look at an electoral map, it istly conservative. However, Vancouver and Victoria are the bulk of the population.

Maybe most of BC will secede from BC.

Inasmuch as individuals might find this pleasing, it is a very bad precedent for the USA, which stands to lose the entire West Coast. While FReepers might rejoice, long-term it's bad both economically and politically.

Better to fix what ails us, starting with teachers colleges. And yes, that means dealing with a problem over a century in the making.

“The group then would have four months to collect just under 178,000 signatures.”

Oregon collected more than that in less than a month to force the legislature passed gas tax to the ballot in November.

This seems highly doable if people really want out. I wonder how it’s polling?

Wishing them all the best in their quest to become an independent nation but.... we do not want them.

As an ally they are fine.

But the Canadian culture is too different to make it a smooth merge and we have enough problems right now.

Give it a couple of decades and we will see. Or they might decide to stay independent.

That would be fine too.
