Theoretically, NATO has no boots on the ground, right? A million dead would be pretty noticeable. Unless it's almost all mercenaries and just a few NATO troops having "training accidents".
When the source cites “NATO soldiers” you know that reporting is unreliable.

Consider on the Russian Front in WW2 the Ruskies lost an estimated 20-30 million people and those numbers aren’t that staggering. Perhaps in today’s sensibilities they are, but they’re not without historical precedent.

It is hard to know the actual numbers. Both sides are playing information warfare, as is important in warfare.
Truth is a precious commodity in warfare, and is given out by both sides with considerable parsimony.
These numbers, publicly given, are almost certainly incorrect.
They are using the same guy who did Vietnamese deaths during that war.
The estimates come from a combination of Western intelligence assessments (UK/US), Ukrainian and Russian official statements, and independent open-source investigators like Mediazona/BBC, with verified death counts providing minimums and intelligence models extrapolating to higher totals.
