The Navy originally planned for 20 ships in the Constellation frigate program.

And we were going to build 32 Zumwalt-class Destroyers. But we stopped at 3 and killed that program too.

It's big money to start a program, design the ships, and tool up to initiate construction. And we now seem to have the habit of starting bad programs, throwing away billions of dollars, and then just walking away from the whole effort.

Weapon System Acquisition is very screwed up and has been for decades.

When you force DEI into DECISION MAKING POSITIONS in large firms you wind up with the wrong decisions being made (not very difficult to grasp, I hope), so we should not consider this to be any surprise.

The question here remains - do we continue to worship at the alter of DEI or do we try to catch up to Russia and China.

So far, given what we see here, it seems DEI is winning.

The navy needs ships. They are getting good an starting a new class then cancelling to start over after one or two prototypes. Something in the management of those systems sucks. Too many bells horns and whistles but no ships.

Note to navy KISS.

The nature of warfare has changed significantly in just the last 3 or 4 years. When these ships were being ordered, we hadn’t seen a nation without a navy attack with drones and effectively run that navy out of the region.

Like the F-22 Raptor. Initially planned 750; 183 operational today. Less than a quarter of the number planned.

China’s moving ahead at flank speed. Meanwhile, we are cancelling programs underway partly because they are three years behind schedule? But how long will it take to get a new design fielded? A decade?

Manned surface ships will eventually fade away. They will be too vulnerable to drones, laser weapons and hypersonic missiles.

Got tired of towing them back to port?

So... Has the Navy indicated what’s the alternate plan?
