A disturbing video from Antioch High School in Nashville shows 18-year-old student Kayla Smith pepper-spraying her teacher, Caleb Bates, after he took her phone during class. She was arrested right after the incident for assault.
What makes it even worse is that this wasn’t the first time Bates had been attacked over a phone. Just two months earlier, another student punched him in the face after he caught them cheating. It’s part of a growing problem teachers are dealing with when they try to enforce basic classroom rules.

Sixty years ago, quite a few teachers in my local schools were WWII and/or Korean War combat veterans. Assaulting a teacher, any teacher, was likely to have sudden and unpleasant consequences for the foolish student.

She’s 18. The teacher had no business snatching her phone from her. PERIOD.
Under Tennessee law he committed assault as defined in TN Code § 39-13-101 (2024)(A)(3):
“A person commits assault who intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another and a reasonable person would regard the contact as extremely offensive or provocative.”
The school can of course expel and trespass this adult from school grounds for being in possession of a cell phone. But their teachers have no right to go hands on with their students over this policy.
Maybe hold parents responsible for their kids misbehavior and crimes? They are learning this defiance and violence directly from their parent(s). Initiate additional classes at the schools imposing court ordered parenting classes to be attended at their schools concurrently with their kids’ classroom schedule or government-paid childcare. In addition to remedial classes, also require public service as school custodial, groundskeeping, school cafeteria labor. Compliant parents could “earn” trustee status to be assigned as teacher’s aide in the classroom, detention monitors, playground monitors, crosswalk guards, etc. All the jobs not currently funded in failing schools. We need some serious out-of-the-box thinking here.

SAME HERE.....ONE STUDENT IN HISTORY CLASS WAS MOUTHING OFF—— LASS WAS ON 2ND Floor with OPEN WINDOWS-—NO A/C THEN-—STUDENT WAS 6” TALLER & 50# HEAVIER.
TEACHER WENT FLYING DOWN To THE LAST ROW & HAD HIM 1/2 WAY OUT THE WINDOW BEFORE ANYONE KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING.
KID GOT 3 MONTHS DETENTION. SHOULD HAVE BEEN 6 MONTHS.
HE BEHAVED AFTER THAT. TEACHER WAS A WWII VET WHO LOST AN EYE.
IF THERE IS A “NO PHONES IN THE CLASS” SCHOOL POLICY-—
THAT SHOULD BE THE RULE

THERE HAS TO SOME SORT OF ORDER.
IF IT WAS MY KID-—THE NEXT PHONE THEY WOULD HAVE WOULD BO ONE THEY PURCHASED WITH THEIR OWN EARNINGS.....

Regardless of whether he “assaulted” her by taking her phone, was pepper spaying him a proportionate response? I heard someone say Austin Metcalf shouldn’t have touched karmelo’s backpack - similar logic. 🤦🏼♀️
When you take away the spankings when they do bad things it never gets any better.
