Republicans’ anti-Biden endgame comes into view: It’s all about the pardons

Biden preemptively protected a variety of people on Trump’s enemies list with pardons. Republicans want to strip them of those protections.

As Republicans renew their offensive against Joe Biden, it’s not unreasonable to wonder about the underlying point of their partisan crusade. The former Democratic president won’t seek elected office again; he can’t be impeached; and even if GOP officials were eventually to concoct something damaging, he can’t be criminally charged. So why bother investing so much time, energy and resources into smearing him? What does the Republican Party hope to gain?

The answer is increasingly obvious.

During a recent appearance on Fox Business, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer claimed there’s “no evidence” that Biden was “involved” in signing pardons, leading the Kentucky Republican to conclude that the Justice Department can declare all of the former president’s pardons “null and void.”

To the extent that reality has any bearing on the debate, Comer’s claims are absurd. The idea that Biden was so cognitively impaired that he was unaware of his own presidential pardons is belied by the Democrat’s own assessments and defenses of his work.

But that hasn’t stopped many of the GOP’s leading voices from obsessing over this specific goal. The day before Comer’s on-air comments, House Speaker Mike Johnson not only said that every Biden pardon should be “voided,” he added that he considers the former president’s pardons to be “invalid on their face.”

Around the same time, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Justice Department had already begun a review of Biden’s pardons.

This comes on the heels of Donald Trump claiming that Biden’s pardons were “illegal” (the incumbent president didn’t say which law was broken), which followed related rhetoric from a month earlier, when the Republican said...

I’d say it’s all about the bogus 2020 election.

If preemptive pardons are ok, then every president would have the power to pardon all of his cronies for crimes that they may not even have been charged with. I mean, why wouldn’t a president to that on his way out? Talk about being a king...

The "endgame" trope is overused and inappropriate.

Any politician of any non-apocalyptic tendency wants to keep the game going, not end it.

Has a president ever signed preemptive pardons?
Lefty AI says: “Yes, presidents have preemptively pardoned individuals before. Notable examples include President Ford pardoning Richard Nixon before he was charged with a crime, President Carter pardoning Vietnam draft dodgers who had not been charged, and President Lincoln pardoning former Confederates. More recently, President Biden issued preemptive pardons for several individuals in January 2025.”

Notice that in all the cases cited, everyone knew the crime alleged: conspiracy; draft evasion; & treason.
The auto pen pardons were open-ended ‘Get Out Of Jail Free, For Anything’ cards.
And it looks likely that they were signing themselves.
This really stinks.

I totally understand the sentiment and agree with those here that the auto-pen pardons are more in likely bogus—but the constitution tells us that Presidential pardons are absolute. As much as I don’t like what was done—when democrats come into power eventually, they will reverse Trumps sweeping pardons of J6 folks—Thus, as much as it sticks in my craw, the Biden Bogus Pardons have to stand.

No they don’t, they were not signed by Biden. Trump’s J6 pardons were signed by Trump. Nice try.

Oh, that’s an interesting superpower. Does anyone in the GOP have it? Have they ever used it to damage a Democrat? I mean, Dems seem to have their own superpower of turning damaging character flaws into resume enhancers.

Pardons are a power the Constitution assigns ONLY to the president, and Congress has no authority to do anything about them.

Trump pardoned a bunch of people during his first term, and some Asian conman just the other day. Does anyone here believe those could be reversed? Of course not.

From what I understand it to be Joe Biden didn’t do all the pardons, It was done without his knowledge by other people who had access to the Auto Pen. Harris or Biden’s son made up the list and had it signed by the auto pen and maybe told the President about it later. But I also heard Joe couldn’t remember some of them. I could be mistaken.
