We ignore Russia at our peril ...
today | me

Posted on 10/29/2025 11:07:12 AM PDT by bassmaner

Those of us who came of age during the Cold War remember such movies as 'Testament' and 'On The Beach', which depicted the aftermath of a full-scale nuclear exchange between the US and USSR. We also remember real-world events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the downing of Flight 007 over Korea in 1983.

Are we naive enough to believe that just because the USSR no longer exists, today's Russia no longer possesses a stockpile of 6500+ nuclear warheads and the means to deliver them anywhere on the planet?

I don't know where the Russia-Ukraine war (or, as Putin calls it, the 'Special Military Operation') is headed after almost 4 years. When each side has suffered 1M+ casualties with comparatively little territory gained, it would seem logical to me that it's only a matter of time until Putin authorizes the use of nuclear weapons on the Ukraine battlefield to put an end to it once and for all. And, considering that Russia still possesses ICBMs, SSBNs, hypersonic drones and long-range bombers, it wouldn't take long for the 'SMO' to quickly escalate into WW3.

Fellow Freepers: am I being overly pessimistic? Please let me know your thoughts on this.

How are we “ignoring Russia?”

By providing long-range missiles to Ukraine that can reach Moscow and saber-rattling by warmongers in Congress such as Lindsay Graham.

Perhaps I should have said ‘underestimating’ instead of ‘ignoring’.

Spoiler alert: Russian nukes don’t work anymore.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that. It only takes 1 to get through and take out a city.

Why is our country a vassal state to Russia? Why are we so far beneath them?

The Z-bots are the only ones “underestimating” Russia.

” pessimistic?”

Yes.

While the likelihood of Russian tactical nukes on the Ukraine battlefield is an ever increasing risk, even if they did so there would be no military reaction.

Because of their stockpile and the means to deliver.

There would be great gnashing of teeth, outrage, sanctions, embargoes etc.

But nobody would shoot...especially the US.

MAD -- Mutually Assured Destruction

Basically, about the only thing that would make Putin (or his handlers) go to nuclear war with us is if he had nothing else to lose. So Putin's not going to start a nuclear war with us as long as Putin's still in charge and still has his millions, and he's not a LSU fan feeling the desperation they're feeling right now.

IMHO the main reason that Putin is continuing the Ukraine war is to teach Europe a long term lesson in sanctioning energy from Russia. If the Ukraine war had been over in a year, dumb Europeans would have hurt only a little from their green energy scam because their leaders would have kept buying gas from Russia on the down low and claiming the grid was stable from solar and wind. But because the Ukraine war makes EU leaders have to boldly be against Russia, the boycott of Russian gas is making Europeans feel the pain; IMHO Putin is wanting it to be a long enough lasting pain that Europe doesn't boycott Russian gas again.

“Spoiler alert: Russian nukes don’t work anymore.”

That’s a lie and you know it.

Why are you spreading a lie?

The Z-bots are the only ones “underestimating” Russia.

Exactly my point. I'm worried about the Z-bots becoming overly influential in Washington again, especially if the 'Rats get back in power and start handing Zelenskyy blank checks like the senile idiot from Rehoboth Beach did.

So when was the last time they did a successful nuclear device test, Mariner? Do you even know?

Russia - 1990
USA - 1992

Explosive testing is not required for any state that has an advanced program.
