K3: The New Tank That Resembles a B-21 Stealth Bomber
National Security Journal ^ | 9/6/2025 | Reuben F. Johnson

Posted on 09/06/2025 7:37:40 AM PDT by whyilovetexas111

South Korea’s Hyundai-Rotem is developing the K3, a next-generation main battle tank concept packed with futuristic technology. Prioritizing firepower, the K3 concept features a larger 130mm main gun with AI-based fire controls and an autoloader for a three-person crew.

The tank is almost an on-the-ground and smaller armored version of something that resembles a B-21 bomber more than a conventional MBT.

Why can't we make tanks that look like spaceships?

Put a bikini-model in a leather bustier atop the hatch, and it could be straight out of a World of Warcraft video game.

Drones are cheaper and can be made very effective suicidal bombers.

“The K3 hydrogen-powered main battle tank”

gonna be fun to watch the logistics of trying to maintain a fuel supply for that thing on the battlefield ... btw, mighten it blow up extra good when hit by a depleted uranium sabot?

also, why is everybody and their uncle’s brother focused on building tanks all of a sudden, when they SHOULD be focused on drone warfare?

Will they be hiring illegal aliens to build them?

The gun is a mistake. 130mm isn’t giving a big jump over the standard 120mm guns in the west (including Korea’s current tank) or 125mm in the east.

The reason the Zumwalt class destroyer was an abject failure was that it had a gun for which there was no ammunition.

There’s also the issue that tanks have been shown to be obsolete in 21st Century warfare.

It’s expected to go into service in 2040.

Why would you send three men into a battle in 2040?

The only reason I can come up with is to get them there for some reason other than running a tank.

With smart artillery shells, there is no longer a need for a big, armored vehicle to carry a big gun through enemy lines.

A big target that needs to be taken out can be identified by say sending up a target indication drone or rocket. An artillery crew can then send an artillery shell into the air high above and the artillery shell can then hit a target like an enemy tank via its less resistant top armor.

I’m in favor of small, fast armored vehicles that can carry one person rapidly through a dangerous area. Such vehicles could, using automated and AI means, take out enemies, avoid obstacles and dangers, and move as erratically as a rabbit.

for the curious with time to spare:

My choice for my one-man armored vehicle is a hybrid drive, so the vehicle can drive with less noise through an area.

Drones are in vogue right now but there will be a counter eventually and other weapons will be more useful again.
