Critics from the opposition argued that Choi’s remarks reflect the Democratic Party’s views, given he was appointed by DP leader Jeong Cheong-rae on August 18 as the head of the Education Institute overseeing training for more than one million DP party members. The position was once described by President Lee as “the most important party role.”
A senior member of the People Power Party told New Daily: “Is it democracy for the party’s education chief to say political opponents must be eliminated? Thinking of your own supporters as ‘democratic independence fighters’ and viewing opposition supporters as people unable to discern right from wrong—it’s elitist, and perhaps reflects the DNA of the DP.”
