India is now facing a 50% import tariff against the majority of their goods (electronics and pharmaceuticals exempted). However, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed not to yield to the pressure. Modi said the world was witnessing a “politics of economic selfishness.”
For approximately a decade many western countries including the U.S. have heaped effusive praise on India as corporations viewed the massive Indian population, the world’s largest democracy, as both workers and consumers. However, after the western sanctions against Russia were delivered, India -a BRICS nation- began pulling back from western alignment and influence.
What we are witnessing now is one of the ramifications of the U.S. forcefully putting an “us or them” aspect into the strategic economic relationship, where “them” is Russia. Currently, India is not flinching.
One could make the argument that undeveloped regions in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) contain the majority of the valuable rare earth minerals and magnets the ‘western’ nations need for manufacturing. BRICS has a pressure point to apply leverage, but no global trade currency, if the trade conflict escalates.
INDIA – Steep U.S. tariffs on a range of Indian products took effect Wednesday, threatening a serious blow to India’s overseas trade in its largest export market.
President Donald Trump had initially announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods. But earlier this month he signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff due to India’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the combined tariffs imposed by the U.S. on its ally to 50%.
The Indian government estimates the tariffs will impact $48.2 billion worth of exports. Officials have warned the new duties could make shipments to the U.S. commercially unviable, triggering job losses and slower economic growth.

And then Europeans purchase the oil from India.
Russia will always find a buyer. India is not our enemy either.
Trump obviously wants this or the tariff would be much lower
End H1-b visas now !
Oooh, but I am not caring.
Start greatly limiting H1B visas for Indians and see what happens.
“electronics and pharmaceuticals exempted”
LOL
yep
If H1-B Visa’s are curtailed the massive campaign contributions from American corporations to politicians will be curtailed. That is why it won’t happen so long as we have life long career politicians who need campaign cash. See my tag line.
India is the largest democracy in Asia, Trump should use a little more common sense when dealing with them.
They never were and they never will be
Have you ever dealt with Indians? It’s not fun at all. But remember negotiation start at no. Also, this is not what so-called friends do. India is not our friend.
“India is not our friend.”
BTTT
You did well to laugh.
India’s surplus with the US is $41B/yr. That’s the combination of India exports and India imports.
Of that $41B, $8B is pharmaceuticals and $2B is electronics.
Exempting those means that only $31B of surplus is in play here to be tariffed.
Well, here’s the bad news. India’s GDP is $3.78T. It’s growth last year was 6%. Q1 2025 it was 7%.
If the entire remaining $31B of surplus got erased, it would be about < 1% of GDP. Nobody’s bones are going to break when doing 7% growth and having 1% yanked.
Have you ever interacted with Indians in business? Going to guess not. Arrogant, inflexible, but will be polite to you while doing the opposite after the conversation is over, they have little respect for women in the culture, will tend to seek out anyone who can give them the answer that they want. Will look to get the most favorable outcome while giving up the least. This is true especially when seeking promotions, compensation etc.
I’ve basically just described Modi’s approach to you. He is outwardly friendly to the U.S. while courting the best deal anyone can give him, in this case Russian oil. It could be China, the U.S. Europe, he won’t care, while he is also happy to flood the U.S. with Indians via the H-1B program while they close markets and access to us. They will act aggrieved while being arrogant and pretentious about it and will dig in on this as long as they can. They are not our friends.
Never were our friend.
Kick the H-1B scavengers out of our country.
Choked on my dinner when I read that. They're thieves, liars, and smelly slobs.
We should sanction the EU for buying it from India.
While we're at it, we should stop buying it from India because we need the good stuff too.
