Step Aboard USS New Jersey: The Iowa-Class Battleship That Could Fight Again
National Security Journal ^ | 8/23/2025 | Stephen Silver

Posted on 08/23/2025 5:38:24 AM PDT by whyilovetexas111

The battleship’s contract with the Navy, Spevak said, says two things: They are “not allowed to touch the engine systems,’ which is one reason why tug boats were used to move it from the dry dock.

And the other is that “the Navy reserves the right to recall the ship back into service in the event of a national emergency.” However, Spevak stated “we have no feeling that that will ever happen again,” and that none of the refurbishments were done with the idea that the ship would ever return to service. The Navy does, however, issue guidelines about how often a museum ship should return to dry dock.

Fun to know the Navy could bring the ship back. However, seems like fantasy.

Are any of our Iowa class battleships in a condition where they could be refurbished to useful fighting condition? Or are the main components of the ships worn out and not feasible cost effective to restore or replace? Like drive system, firing aiming analog systems., steering, 16 inch gun turrets, etc?

16 inch guns have a range of 25 miles. Not good anymore.

Which Museum Ships Would be Brought Back First if Needed?

IF we have to bring back the NJ we’re in a bad spot war wise and nukes probably have been used.

It could still be used for a pulverizing shore bombardment. Not too much left.

I would assume, at some point in time, the military will come up with a defense against hypersonic missiles, which are still very low speed compared to lasers.

Clickbait title. The article is about the drydock project to maintain USS New Jersey. It is not about reactivating the Iowa class as functional warships.

The were several reason the Iowa's were decommissioned in the 1990s. The USSR had collapsed, and the ships were getting worn out and it was increasingly difficult to maintain them.

No one was making 200,000 SHP water tube boilers or 16" shell hoists anymore.

There is a reason we no longer deploy battleships. Why no blue water navy deploys battleships.

A 16” AP projectile can penetrate 30 feet of solid concrete. The projectile travels three times the speed of sound. As for blast radius of a 16” HC: “The High Capacity (HC) shell can create a crater 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep (15 x 6 m).

Use of the ship depends on who the enemy is and their capabilities. We do have ships with anti-missile capabilities, which could provide a bubble of protection for close in operations. Also, we have amphibious ships that can land troops by sea and air. They have their vulnerabilities as well.

If nukes have been used, then nothing is going to be refurbished in the 25 minutes to an hour before the world is engulfed.

Going to have to go back to the drawing board on the engines and turbine. No one alive and deployable knows how they work. Could pull them and drop in couple of AW4 nuclear reactors and she’d scream.

Wonder why no RAP was developed. (Rocket assisted projectile).

And, of course, safety was a problem with them as they did have a turrent explosion that killed 47 sailors.

The cause of the explosion was never determined. The best guess was that the old powder was unstable and an over-ram of the powder during loading the gun caused the explosion.

“Fun to know the Navy could bring the ship back. However, seems like fantasy.”

Most of our Cold War navy was scrapped and I suspect most of its steel was sent to China. Would have been nice if the Neocons had kept a few boats around for their ‘adventures’.

Before the ships were removed from service, several types of sabot rounds were under development which would have extended the range dramatically.

Need new classes of ships for a new age. The old ways are done. Battleships have some attractive features like armor and at ranges of 20 miles can be destructive but they are so last century. What do I recommend?
1. New form of fast carrier to fly drones. They can be small, maybe use recycled old ones. unmanned air crafts only.
2. A combination Battleship-carrier. An armored monster that can take a beating, armed with rockets, rail guns, lasers and a wing of planes. Filled with Anti-Aircraft weapons.
3. A fleet of new Monitors. Single turret craft with rail guns and armored to fight close to land and hit inland with accuracy. Named after Native American Tribes.
4. Combination Carrier submarines, to carry drones and planes for surprise raids. Named after fish.
5. Large troop transports to carry thousands. Fast and well armed to defend against subs. Lots of troops need to be moved quickly along with supplies.
6. A presidential Yacht—something impressive but also well armed as a warship “Navy One” named USS Liberty. a floating palace to impress leaders and protect them.

Maybe replace the machinery with nuclear propulsion and replace the entire armament.

The big reason we might need these is their armor. Modern ships aren’t as resilient.
