Breaking Late: Obama Judge Blocks Trump Admin From Withholding Funds From More Than 30 ‘Sanctuary Cities’

A federal judge out of San Francisco on Friday blocked President Trump from pulling federal funds from ‘sanctuary cities.’

US District Judge William Orrick, and Obama appointee, blocked Trump from withholding funds from Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and more than 30 other sanctuary cities.

The Associated Press reported:

A judge ruled late Friday the Trump administration cannot deny funding to Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and 30 other cities and counties because of policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration efforts.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco extended a preliminary injunction blocking the administration from cutting off or conditioning the use of federal funds for so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions. His earlier order protected more than a dozen other cities and counties, including San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.

..... Snip.....

“Here we go again,” Judge Orrick wrote in his 6-page order blasting Trump for his second round of executive orders aimed at ending the subsidization of open borders.

In 2017, Judge Orrick permanently blocked a similar executive order from Trump’s effort to defund sanctuary cities.

The judge said withholding funds from sanctuary jurisdictions is unconstitutional. He said it violates the Fifth and Tenth Amendments and also violates due process.

Evading justice is the process of grabbing people using masked enforcers, and then shipping them out of the country without the legal hearings they are entitled to by law. We are either a country of laws, or an outlaw country. Over 20 Trump appointed Judges decided we are a country of laws. See Comment #20.

In my comment 120, my computer “corrected” my intended phrase “these cases were overseen” to “these CAUSES were overseen.” AI strikes again! GRRRRRR

The judiciary, not the legal system, it’s one of the branches of government. Legal system would include lawyers working for the other branches and private citizens, and a lot of other quasi-judicial entities not part of the court system.

The judiciary is one of three branches, but the branches are not co-equal in all areas. For example, the courts don’t direct the movement of troops or pass legislation. And on the issue of funding sanctuary cities, they merely review rights, laws and deciding by the other branches.

The best solution to many of these problems is for the Congress to enact laws, such as further outlawing sanctuary cities.

Likewise I always call on Congress to outlaw state bans on drilling and fracking, which jeopardize our national security.

Regarding funding for so-called sanctuary cities, maybe the executive should withhold funds from lawless cities.

And regarding the 2020 election fraud, States put systems in place like lock boxes, mail voting and counting late ballots which were in themselves fraudulent. However, election laws are narrow and the courts refused to review the situation from a realistic standpoint.

Maybe that narrow review is good, and maybe it isn’t. Likewise, Congress should outlaw wide use mail voting.

You mention Giuliani. The wonderful court system allowed him to be disbarred and impoverished for taking legal actions before them as was his right.

Unfortunately, it turns out that a lot of cities in red states also have high or higher murder rates. Regarding mail in ballots, while at 86 I walked to my last vote, now at 87 I may soon have to resort to the mail in ballots.

Yes of course the absentee mailing ballot will always have its place but that was always for health exceptions or because a person was traveling not meant for the use of millions and millions of people.

Come on now you are well aware that the cities are Democrat and that’s true for almost all the cities in red States as well. For that matter it’s true in the blue states that the cities are where the Democrats get all their votes and that’s where all the crime is.

I think you need to do a deep dive on crime statistics, as all the reports I hear are saying cities like Memphis and New Orleans have much higher murder rates than those like NY or DC. Also red states as a whole are said to tend to have higher crime rates. Certainly there are some areas that have high drug rates from fentanil(sp?), like West Virginia. I decided to find murder rates by cities:

“Here is a general ranking, though specific order can vary by source and year:
Ranked by highest murder rates:
1. Memphis, TN: Consistently ranks at the top for murder rate among major US cities, with a rate of 71.0 per 100,000 residents as of early 2025.
2. St. Louis, MO: Holds a high murder rate, with one report citing 69.4 homicides per 100,000 people in 2024.
3. Baltimore, MD: Appears frequently among the cities with the highest homicide rates, with one source listing 51.1 per 100,000 people in 2024.
4. Detroit, MI: Another city with a persistently high murder rate, listed with 39.7 homicides per 100,000 in 2024.
5. New Orleans, LA: Listed with 40.6 homicides per 100,000 people in 2024.
6. Cleveland, OH: Shows a high murder rate, with 33.7 homicides per 100,000 people.
7. Las Vegas, NV: Included with a rate of 31.4 per 100,000 people.
8. Kansas City, MO: Ranked high with 31.2 homicides per 100,000 people.
9. Newark, NJ: Appears with a murder rate of 25.6 per 100,000 people.
10 Chicago, IL: Shows a significant rate, with 24.0 homicides per 100,000 people.”

The chart here shows Washington, DC, as number 18 for murder rate with around 25 per 100,000 in 2024:

This chart lists some cities not included in the first chart of top 10 cities for murder.

I decided to look at murder rates for states, and it appears that despite high murder rates in some Democrat cities, the general murder rate is mostly higher in southern (red) states.

“Based on data from late 2024 and early 2025, Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Mexico consistently rank among the top states for murder rates, with Alabama also appearing in the top five. The most dangerous states are primarily in the South, with nine of the ten deadliest states located there.
Here is a list of states that frequently appear with high murder rates:

1. Louisiana: Often cited as the state with the highest murder rate.
2. Mississippi: Frequently ranks in the top for murder rates, alongside Louisiana.
3. New Mexico: Part of the top five for murder rates in the U.S.
4. Alabama: Also listed in the top five for murder rates.
5. Texas: Ranked among the top 10 most dangerous states in 2023.
6. Arkansas: Ranked in the top 10 most dangerous states in 2023.
7. Oklahoma: Appears on the list of top 10 dangerous states.
8. Montana: Ranked in the top 10 most dangerous states in 2023.
9. Florida: Also listed in the top 10 dangerous states.
10. Tennessee: Ranked among the top four states for violent crime and murder rates.”

I would think these states would beg/demand that our President help them get control over their murder and drug rates.

That’s fine and the mayors of Memphis and New Orleans are both Democrats of course.

Our immigration law allows the Attorney General to decide that a deportable illegal alien (IOW, somebody already found deportable through the legal process, as was Abrego Garcia) is a threat to our national security. When that is done, the person in question is not ELIGIBLE to be retained in the US because he/she fears the place they will be deported to. MS-13 has been designated as a terrorist organization. The man has symbols for MS-13 tattooed on his knuckles, the father of the children in Abrego Garcia’s girlfriend’s household applied to get custody of the children because he feared Abrego Garcia who he said was a gang member, Abrego Garcia’s girlfriend applied for a restraining order because he was beating her and their child, and he illegally drove across the country on an expired MD driver’s license (that was only valid in MD) to traffic illegals.

This guy had his due process already. Whatchu talkin’ about, Willis?
