Land for peace means new Russian military bases in Donbas and a strengthened war machine for Putin
The Washington Times ^ | Wednesday, August 20, 2025 | Ben Wolfgang

The ugly truth behind any deal that would cede a chunk of Ukraine’s Donbas region to Moscow is that it could immediately strengthen the Russian military, providing a major win for one of America’s leading adversaries in an era of great power competition.

In such a scenario, Ukraine would lose some of its most heavily fortified defensive positions. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s generals would seek to deepen their substantial footprint in the strategically vital theater with new military bases. The Russian navy could gain even greater control over the Black Sea. The Russian government and its armed forces could take de facto ownership of the significant mineral deposits underground in eastern Ukraine.

The U.S., Ukraine and Europe likely will insist on a sizable buffer zone designed to prevent Russia from turning the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, which collectively make up the Donbas, into a military hub that could threaten Kyiv and other former Soviet nations in Eastern Europe. It’s unclear how that scenario could be prevented, short of a permanent multinational contingent of ground troops stationed in the region willing to fight the Russian army if necessary.

NATO officials, including Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met Wednesday to discuss such a plan and held a “candid discussion,” a senior alliance official told The Associated Press.

Alliance members, including the U.S., have given few, if any, indications that they are truly willing to engage in all-out war against the Russians if, as many battlefield analysts fear, the Kremlin inevitably breaks whatever agreement is made to end the current conflict.

Questions are swirling around President Trump’s push to end the war, including exactly what the U.S. military commitment would be to the still-undetermined “security guarantees” the West says it is willing to provide to Ukraine.

So what’s the alternative? Land 500,000 US troops in then let everyone glow in the dark?.

Either cede Donbas to Russia or continue continue killing of Ukrainians. It is a Hobson’s choice.

If I hear the neocon phrase “security guarantees” one more time, I’m gonna toss cookies.

The Ukraine lost its security guarantees when they listened to BoJo the clown back in 2022.

Will Trump come home from these potential meetings waving a piece of paper and exclaiming peace in our time?

--- "...truly willing to engage in all-out war against the Russians...."

Very clear. To act as combatants, we cannot act as negotiators. So all in. Or all out. Not "half pregnant."

Who here thinks President Trump is going to declare "all-out war against the Russians?"

I don't think that is going to happen.

Russia occupies most of the Donbas, Luhansk, and Crimea NOW. Why would a peace deal make it MORE likely that Russia would build threatening military bases? They can already build any sort of bases there that they please.

Right. Every day since Trump and Putin met in Alaska, including the day of the meeting, the MSM,EU, Democrats and RINOs have been trying to create CHAOS over any peace deal.
If they really cared about people dying, they would STFU and quite trying to muddy the waters, but they can’t stop the hysteria.
Everyone except Trump, Zelensky and Putin needs to stay out of it! They are NOT the deciders no matter how badly they want to be relevant.

Well…he’s winning the war. When you win a war you keep stuff. Whether we like it or not.

And then give up the land anyway?

Wrong. Russia has been unable to take the Ukrainian fortress city line in Western Donbas. Once you give it to them they have an open plain into much of the rest of Ukraine.

And Russia wants to veto any defense of Ukraine.

With the Russians now saying Ukraine really won’t have any security guarantee, there never was a serious offer.

The only thing Russia will respond to is a serious military threat. If you can produce that with sanctions, great. But that’s just reality.

When Trump says the war wouldn’t have happened when he was president, he means that he wouldn’t have tolerated it. But now we are tolerating it, so ....

“The neocons always have to have a war...”

If the Neocons didn’t want to get SPANKED, with new Russian bases in what was Ukraine, they shouldn’t have started their war against Russia.

You all need to consider the source for these reports tonight. They are known for taking things out of context, not telling the whole story and out right lying.

1. If Ukraine refuses to give up their defensive positions in the Donbas, and there is no security agreement with outside forces, Russia will eventually override those defenses and destroy Ukraine as a nation.

2. If Ukraine does give up their defensive positions in the Donbas, Russia will soon come up with an excuse to easily invade the rest of the country and destroy Ukraine as a nation.

In either case, Ukraine ceases to exist. If they are going to be exterminated, I would assume that they would prefer (2) to go down fighting than (1) commit suicide.

If they are looking at being exterminated either way they go, I would think that they don’t care what anyone—whether world leaders or Russia internet posters—thinks.

It's a war of attrition on the scale of WWI. The war ends when one side is exhausted.

The war is "existential" for both sides.

Let’s see....

The Russians already have it. Check.

The Ukrainians can’t push them off. Check.

No one is going to help the Ukrainians push the Russians off. Check.

Let’s worry about the new military bases they can put in the territory they already control with their military.

That’s stupid. The Russians now have new bases in the Donbas. It is, as the French say, a “Fait Accompli”
