Trump Could End the Ukraine War, But America Might Not Like the Price
National Security Journal ^ | 8/19/2025 | Doug Bandow

While President Trump deserves credit for pursuing diplomacy to end the Ukraine war—a step his predecessor avoided—his strategy contains a grave risk to U.S. interests. In his pursuit of a historic peace deal, Trump has proposed offering Ukraine an “Article 5-like” security guarantee. This commitment, made outside of NATO, could obligate the U.S. military to defend Ukraine and create a direct tripwire for conflict with a nuclear-armed Russia.

I hope when he gets back he can take a look at whether the guy running for mayor in NYC who has citizenship in Uganda has the legal right to take office.

It’s a problem

I guess he thinks he’s being a “good guy” but the American people want out of the Ukrainian quagmire completely — not deeper into it.

It would also create conditions for a tripwire with a nuclear armed US.

The whole point of MAD is that it works both ways, which would keep any confrontation conventional.

What Articles 5 and 6 actually say:

NATO ARTICLES 5 & 6

https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/official_texts_17120.htm

Article 5

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

Article 6

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:

• on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France, on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;

• on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.

Ukraine has significant reserves of rare earth minerals and related critical raw materials.

Our “security” will be provided to protect our mining of these minerals.

“ This commitment, made outside of NATO, could obligate the U.S. military to defend Ukraine and create a direct tripwire for conflict with a nuclear-armed Russia.”

We should return all the nukes that we dismantled in Ukraine in the 90’s.

As an American you should know that Russia invading countries in Europe to rebuild their military might, advance their strategic positioning, taking major ports, mineral and agricultural assets, and gaining industrial strength and population for rebuilding their empire, is of major concern to us and that Russian aggression and threat is the reason for so much of our military budget and readiness.

Take a look at our national defense, and think about why this massive European war being fought by Russia and North Korea against Ukraine is important to us, and why we support and aid Ukraine.

The Russians in Ukraine must be like the Jooz here. The European Union should be more attractive to their well-being than their unlikable brothers and sisters.

We should return all the nukes that we dismantled in Ukraine in the 90’s.

Ukraine's weapons were returned to Russia for disposal, including all warheads and some delivery systems. Delivery systems not returned to Russia, like strategic bombers and ICBMs, were destroyed in Ukraine.

Here comes the MIC mouthpiece again. The NSJ never saw a war or weapon system it didn’t live. Ridiculously obvious propaganda.

Trump must walk away from the war if Zelensky won't take the deal he worked out with Putin.

Ukraine isn't his problem or our problem.

We've trying to sanctions for three and half years AND THEY HAVE FAILED MISERABLY.

The definition of insanity is doing the same over and over again and expecting a different result.

The only sanctions (sanctions on items we can't get cheaply elsewhere like generic drugs from India) that would work would cripple our economy and Trump isn't going to commit political suicide and do so.
