NEW YORK CITY — In a stunning example of rampant fascism, a TV network cancelled a show that wasn't making any money and had terrible ratings.

"The Colbert Show spoke truth to power and its cancelation is a chilling example of the fascism that's growing every day here in the U.S.A.," online culture blogger Danielle Swanson wrote this week. "With Colbert off the air, there will not be one single late-night host left who will criticize Trump. Fascism has won."

CBS announced this week it was cancelling The Late Show starring Steven Colbert, stating it was purely a business decision due to no one watching the show and its losing $40 million every year. However, journalists and Democratic politicians argued that the show's 100-million-dollar budget had nothing to do with the cancellation and place the blame squarely at the feet of the Trump administration.

"My losing the company tens of millions of dollars every year is textbook fascism," said Colbert. "That dastardly Trump has done it again!"

At publishing time, CBS had informed Colbert he could still cry and screech for 90 minutes every night, he just would no longer be on camera or get paid.

The last real Talk Show late night hosts were Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, but Carson was the best of all of them.

During the Clinton Monica scandal Leno made frequent jokes about it and was asked if he was anti Clinton. He said in effect, his job is to entertain his audience and the jokes wrote themselves with Clinton.

Show That Wasn't Making Money Canceled

This is actually unusual.

I remember when ABC tanked their #1 hit show after Roseanne Barr called Valerie Jarrett a monkey and canceled their #2 hit show "Last Man Standing" because Tim Allen was "too Trumpy."

If you’re producing a night show that cost over $100 million a year to make and that show is losing OVER $50 million a year, you’re doing it wrong!

The late night talk show format has been adopted by the podcasters who are doing it much better for a microscopic fraction of the cost and to a much larger audience.

Does anyone think Joe Rogan spends $100 million a year flying people to Austin to sit on his couch for three hours? And there's dozens others doing what Rogan does and getting bigger audiences than the night shows are getting.
