Former Congressman and current OAN host Matt Gaetz was secretly recorded by a fellow airline passenger—who then leaked his private text messages with his mother to the internet.
The footage, which was uploaded by a TikTok user going by the handle tidesofmarch, reveals a private, over-the-shoulder shot of Gaetz texting with his mother, Vicky Gaetz, about everything from family finances to his media strategy regarding President Donald Trump.
In the now-public texts, Gaetz’s mother warns her son not to criticize President Trump, urging him to remember his loyalty to the MAGA movement.
Gaetz’s mom wrote: “Don’t be criticizing the President or his actions. He’s trying to keep us safe. That’s his job. MAGA will turn on you. You will lose viewership. Your days in congress are over, practice of law? Let’s not mess up the media gig. The president has been a very good friend to you. He hates betrayal. Be smart, not stubborn.”
To which Gaetz replied, “I’m trying to guide him, not criticize him.”
He added: “But I’ve never been freer to share my views — and I’ll continue to do so. I think about the people who cheered the Iraq war because they liked Bush. Those people have blood on their hands.”
His mom responded, stating: Don’t guide him in the public square. He has intelligence and briefing that you are not privy to.”
Gaetz responded,” You’d be surprised… Guiding DJT always includes a private and public component. I know how to do it.”
The video also captured Gaetz discussing his financial stability, reassuring his concerned mother that he is thriving: “I’m a happily married man with a son on the way, two penthouse condos, a 1:1 real estate asset to debt ratio. I have $500K in my bank account cash.”
The leaked messages also reveal his views on Iran.
Gaetz wrote:
Iran has been 3 months away from a nuke since 1992. They had surrendered their ICBM program in 2003. They have done no R&D on re-entry capability. These are facts.
…
Iran’s nuclear program posed no threat to the U.S., North Korea actually does.
While critics are breathlessly spinning this as “proof” that Gaetz is backstabbing Trump, the reality is quite the opposite: the messages demonstrate a loyal MAGA ally seeking to influence the America First agenda strategically rather than blindly.

Gaetz addressed the privacy violation on X:
“Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge. They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop.”
“Please let this be a reminder to everyone to CALL YOUR MOTHER!”
TWEETS AT LINK................
Critics are salivating at the opportunity to smear Gaetz once again. They conveniently ignore the disturbing ethics of someone spying on a fellow passenger’s personal messages.
Matt was my Congresscritter...................
Covertly recording and releasing someone’s private texts sounds very illegal
Very stupid to go on X and address this.
So someone got close enough to record everything that Matt was texting to his mom? I’m gonna call BS on this one… You have to get awfully close to someone to record their texts and if Matt doesn’t have spatial awareness, like you can FEEL that when somebody is that close, then he’s an idiot
So basically someone eavesdropped on Gaetz’s private conversation and published it - that someone should be prosecuted. I’m not particularly a fan of Gaetz, but the man is entitled to his privacy.
“I’m a happily married man with a son on the way, two penthouse condos, a 1:1 real estate asset to debt ratio. I have $500K in my bank account cash.”
In the history of the world, who talks to their mom like that?
Gaetz was either on a commercial airline or in an airport. I doubt there is a case for privacy rights. Similarly, there is no expectation of privacy when using free airport wifi. When you log into the public wifi, you sign an agreement to that end.
Not very discreet, at the least. C’mon, man.
MAYBE the person recording Matt was a SHE.
Maybe she was HOT!
he would not be the first guy to fall into a Honey Trap.
James O’Keefe makes a living getting stupid guys to spill their secrets to some hot girl or guy.
“...happily married man ...” yeah, that sounds very suspicious to me.............
Agreed. Somebody standing up in the airplane seat behind Gaetz (during flight?) filming him texting over a long period of time would be VERY suspicious and get the flight attendant’s attention very quickly. Other passengers would notice, too. Smells like BS.
His mother is smart. Matt is dumb.
The conversation is a bit embarrassing. Not so bad, considering how much Matt is known to ‘Party’ in his private life. Or did before the present.
His Mom actually gives him good advice on staying in control and on Trump’s good side.
“Don’t be criticizing the president. MAGA will turn on you. You will lose viewership!” said she.
I noticed what appears to be a photo of Matt’s Mom, as she is seated in a wheelchair.
My conspiracy theory Spidey Senses are tingling on this one. Sounds staged.
Social media warriors think they can do no wrong when it comes to dishing on others. Scum of the earth, they are.
Let me guess … the next line says: “I’m so happy to be hung like a horse too, Mom!” :-P
You are confusing disclaimers about liability, with outright theft.
Republicans need to learn from this.
First, the incident from nearly 30 years ago with the GOP congressional conference call, including newly elected Speaker Newt Gingrich, should have told them everything they need to know about being surveilled for political purposes. Be. Very. Careful.
Second, pursue to the extent possible, perhaps with civil actions for invasion of privacy, the people behind this. Burn these people down to the ground financially. Start with the handle used on social media, then subpoena records from the airline for the identities of passengers sitting in the row behind. Bring civil actions that will drain their resources.
Third, adopt privacy protection approaches that minimize the likelihood of this kind of issue. They are out there, surveilling politicians and public figures they dislike, and they will resort to tactics like this. Neutralize it.
