As colleges return to requiring test scores for admissions, the SAT has become shorter and easier, charges Michael Torres, policy director for the Classic Learning Test (CLT), on the Martin Center blog. The SAT now caters to students who have trouble reading long, complex texts.

The author of this book is a statistician and social psychologist, and in 2012, he started to notice a "hockey stick" style rise in anxiety, depression and self-harm among girls, and exclusion, various mental disorders and suicide among boys

He attributes this to the introduction of cell phones with front-facing cameras, and the rise of social media.

These are mental poison to adolescents and young adults.

The reason incoming college students have trouble comprehending complex written text is that they were never taught to read at all. First, bring back phonics-taught reading. Also bring back the critical-thinking comprehensive reading exercises.

I remember our teacher assigning us two or three paragraph stories after which we had to answer multiple questions about what we read. It forced us to pay attention to details, such as “What color shirt was Sally wearing?” and “Where was Tom going when he left the house?”

And then there was also the major question to be answered, “What did Tom learn on his trip with Sally?” Answer: “Never criticize Sally’s clothing choices”.

We give the PSAT 9, PSAT 10 and the SAT for end of year tests. Scores are dismal. Students have little stamina for reading. They AI their writing unless they are totally shut down with paper and pencil. Year 42 in the books...so much has changed.

Yep. When this generation finishes polishing its Participation Trophies and realizes that they didn’t learn enough to score well on college tests, the Leftists’ haave the answer: Make the test easier. Yep, that will fix the problem when they get out in the real world. Somebody’s going to have this iPhone generation for lunch in the labor market.

Joanne Jacobs, here is something to ask your primary care doctor: “Did they pass the MCAT exam for medical school on their first attempt?”

ACT was a dumbed-down SAT, which the SAT copied with its “evidence-based” test of 2016. That worked fine, but due to Obambi DEI and Covid, the College Board had its ass kicked, so had to figure out how to reduce expenses.

Solution: digital test.
Problem: digital format can’t support long text. (Simply doesn’t work).

It’s all about the money $$$.

My 2nd grade teacher used phonics. 1963. From that point forward, I had a nearly flawless run of perfect scores on my spelling tests. Later, phonics turned out to be useful for both my Spanish, German and Welsh classes. It hasn't been as useful for Scot's Gaelic because I haven't mastered all the rules for that language.

I really dropped the ball on college entrance exams. My peers were very frothy over taking PSAT tests. I never took one. I didn't even prep for the SAT. I just took it. A morning session. A lunch break where I downed a quart of eggnog, then an afternoon test session. I applied to UCSD and was accepted at Revelle College. I started in Jan 1974 and graduated in June 1976.

I did read some prep material for the GRE. No problem being accepted into the microbiology department at San Diego State University. UCSD had a "no inbreeding policy", so I didn't apply to grad school at UCSD.

I think there has been a serious failing on the part of the public schools in preparing students for college (or even a non-college future).
